APS: What's in a name? (Washington-Lee)

Lincoln wasn't any champion of equal rights, despite what you libs have been spoon fed. Consider his own words:

During his famous debates with Sen. Stephen Douglas, Lincoln explained to the crowd: “I am not, nor ever have been, in favor of bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the white and black races … I am not nor ever have been in favor of making voters or jurors of Negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white people; and I will say in addition to this that there is a physical difference between the white and black races which I believe will forever forbid the two races from living together on terms of social and political equality. And inasmuch as they cannot so live, while they do remain together there must be a position of superior and inferior, and I as much as any other man am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race.”

Yeah f#ck that guy, right?

Actually, no. Way to miss the point though.

The point is that Lincoln was a man contemporary to the times. Lincoln didn't consider blacks equal. He was an opportunist who issued the EP to break the back of the CSA and preserve the Union.

Pick up a book and read. You might learn something.

They wanted to honor a person, but rather than putting his name on it, they chose a name that's symbolic of one of his great achievements and also can be tied to an educational theme. I certainly don't expect anything new to come out about John Glenn to create a controversy, but even if it did, the name is still okay because it's tied to things that are bigger than just him rather than to him personally.

If John Glenn hadn't been a white guy they'd have named the school Glenn Elementary. It's not even debatable - we didn't name Fleet elementary after some general noun.

I'm opposed to the MILLIONS of dollars it's going to take to change the name---signs, uniforms, etc. It is forecast to be very expensive.

APS has so many pressing issues that this just seems like a pain in the *ss diverting funds from the building of new schools, etc.

They can do both.

Not from what I've seen...

No they weren’t. They were people of their time. You offend me. They don’t.

Being an asshole is timeless. I always hated the relative moral argument. I don't care if I offend you. Your forefathers are awful.

I guess we should change the name of "Arlington" as well. After all, it's named after the traitor Lee's plantation.

And yet they wrote a bunch of horseshit about all men being created equal... While enslaving men (, women and children. As well as raping women).

Anyway, we can just drop Lee and change Washingron to honor a different Virginian, Booker T. Washington. Done. Mascot can be the peanuts.

It all just rings hollow.
Integrate the schools, then I’ll give an F.

x10000 times this

A name change is window dressing for limo liberals to make themselves feel better. If they truly were concerned, when the high school boundaries were being redrawn, they would have suggested the name change at that time AND pushed to have boundaries that would create more diversity at Yorktown. Neither happened.
