Should Asians boycott some elite universities that practice holistic admissions?

5.6 percent of the total American population IDs as Asian. Seems like a very high % vs population?

Sounds like 22% is way too high...maybe it should be like 6%?

I'm sure you would support harvard being 2% jewish then?

For the millionth time, Judaism is not a race, and religion is not factored in college admissions at most selective colleges.

I think you know the meaning. Jews make up approximately 2% of the population; yet, make up approximately 30% (?) of the Ivy League. What's wrong with that? When Jesse Jackson and Luis Farrakhan push for more Jewish basketball and football players in the NBA and the NFL, we can talk.

You would be laughed at with that assertion in Israel.

Wouldn’t refusing to answer the race question be a less counterproductive approach? And/or suggesting a process in which applications are anonymized (no names)? Basically, applicant decides whether his or her race is in the mix.

And how do you feel about gender balancing?

Well that’s what we are talking about right? Maybe we should just base it on population %? This seems fair for a university. Unlike your example comparing religion vs race. So what percentage of Catholics, Muslims or Buddhist should there be? Is it fair that a religion that is to 2% of the population takes 30% of the admissions? Let’s face it, if the religion in question was not your religion you would be salty about that.

And for the ten millionth time, Asians are not a race either. Asia is a continent. You have Chinese, Koreans, Indians, Pakistanis, Sri Lankans and others lumped together because they are from the same continent. Clearly Indians are not the same race as the Chinese, but who cares right?

And evolutionarily speaking, you cannot say the whole concept of race is bogus, and then have race based admissions.

BTW, when we cannot have immigration based on race to add diversity to the country, why is it ok to have race based admissions? We outlawed race based immigration in 1965, but we still have race based admissions to our universities?

How about limiting the # of Hispanics migrating to the US and increasing the number of Whites from Eastern and Western Europe? Hispanics are an overrepresented minority when it comes to immigrants to this country. So will all the supporters of Affirmative based racial balancing be ok if we said only 10% of future immigrants will be Hispanic? Of course not. There they will not tolerate any race based Affirmative action.

How about the NBA and the NFL? Should we limit certain people to a certain percentage? I mean, tall people make up maybe 1% of the population, so the NBA should have mostly short to average height players? And we know the NFL is mostly iron-pumping meatheads. Should we not have more Jewish torah scholars and asian surgeons in the mix? That would be the epitome of diversity.

I think you can. Race may be bogus biologically speaking, but it is a big deal politically speaking.

And if this were the "what happens in Israel" forum, that might be a useful comment.

The Supreme Court will be moving to the right, 5-4, solid conservative. Hopeful, no more robbing deserving Peter to pay URM Paul.

Discrimination against Asian Americans will finally end.

What discrimination? 5% of the population get 22% of the slots. With numbers like that, the status quo is what you want.

Harvard's own internal study shows Asians should make up 43%. (Same as what CalTech is now.)

You’d also be laughed at by any Jewish person. While one can convert to Judaism, it is also an ethnicity. There are several variations, including Ashkenazi and Sephardic. It’s such an ethnicity, in fact, that in genetic screenings (such as during pregnancy), doctors do a “Ashkenazi Jew panel” to screen for genetic disorders that tend to crop up within the Ashkenazi Jewish community. I know because I am 50% Ashkenazi and my husband is 75%, so our obgyn did that panel.
