All clothing is ugly these days

Actually, no, "one" can't. Everything at AT and J Crew and Brooks Brothers has no darting/definition in the waist, haven't you noticed? Seriously, go look at AT blouses/tops online right now. They are all boxy/loose, and have weird colors and prints, and have random tie-things at the neckline.

100%. Case in point:

shapeless + puffy 3/4 sleeves + most unflattering color ever - https://www.anntaylor.com/lantern-sleeve-double-v-top/436829?skuId=23798137&defaultColor=7390&colorExplode=false&catid=cata000010

boxy + ruffles + ties + totally see thru + dotted - https://www.anntaylor.com/dotted-ruffle-tie-neck-blouse-/440701?skuId=23737419&defaultColor=2222&colorExplode=false&catid=cata000010

boxy + ties and bows - https://www.anntaylor.com/bow-cuff-blouse/444958?skuId=23672680&defaultColor=5348&colorExplode=false&catid=cata000010

That s**t is heinous!

boxy + ruffle sleeve + bold pattern that goes with nothing - https://www.anntaylor.com/leaves-silk-tie-sleeve-blouse/442640?skuId=23353619&defaultColor=5095&prodId=442640

If you don't get it, your age might be sneaking up on you. As they say, the surest sign that you're older is that the music all becomes bad on the radio!

Hey, more bell sleeves, ruffles, and puffy shirts for you then! You can have them! Those of us with taste will pass.

Define "taste". The typical DCUM frau look?

But hey, go ahead and wear a sparkly pineapple button down.

Some of these are perfectly fine.

But even if they weren't- you're cherry picking clothing pieces. I guarantee you I could pick several shirts and outfits from the 60, 70s, 80s, 90s, aughts, etc that would be butt ugly. It would be absurd to try to claim that all fashion from those eras is objectively ugly because there are a few pieces I don't like.

Get a grip.

Where do you shop? I'm serious.

Why would I even tell you? You obviously shop from these places since you had all these things pulled up.

How old are you?

I am the NP who asked where you shop. I wanted some help, I wasn't rude and I don't live in DC.
I really just want some help but you seem more interested in insulting us.

Agree. I'm 30 and love classic pieces with edge and vintage 50s/60s silhouettes. Would love to see examples of what this chick actually wears.

New thought:

I agree with all of the above. What's with the boxy, flowy tops?

Can I say...

I blame the LEGGING.

On Friday, I tried desperately for 4 hours to find pants I like. Half of it is leggings. The other 45% is skinny pants or jeggings (so leggings). I found some straight pants with either too much detail or not in my size. And I can't do bootcut but I still tried out the three pairs I could find. Again, odd details like too much feathering, distressing, etc.

2) J Crew (pencil skirts)
3) MM LaFleur (the viscose/nylon/elastane dresses)
4) M Gemi (shoes)
5) Cuyana (accessories)

Ew.

What's so "ew" about basics?

NP but I also want to know what's ew about this list? It sounds classy to me.

No, sorry, you missed the point. I wasn't saying CZ/Babe Paley should be anyone's icons. I'm saying they were all similar in the 60s, and at that time, they were IT. Now, you can have diverse influencers all at once, which is great, but designers need to pick a lane, and not try to emulate all those influencers at once. You can't be all things to all people. So decide what your niche is, and stick to it (I'm talking to designers here, not consumers). At least be consistent within one collection/season.

That's why J Crew and so many other mass retailers have disappointed their customers in recent years--they have tried to be all things to all customers, and they have failed.

I agree with this. Why is Talbots featuring a shirt that might look okay on a 14 year old, but not on anybody older than that? Why not accept that they sell work clothes for women over 30 (with some weekend stuff for them as well)? Why try to sell gingham with ruffles, as they were this summer? 14-year-olds just are not going to shot at Talbots, ever.

+1. I refuse to wear clothes with words on them.

Shopping for clothes is a nightmare now. Good post, OP.

That might be a legitimate grievance. The fact that the style has changed to something the DCUM fraus cannot understand is not.

but surely you are not suggesting middle aged women should wear this stuff? we do exist, and we do need clothes. Why does every seller have to make clothes for 14 year old girls? Or are you suggesting that just because you are a middle aged woman, you should stay home and just not go out in public because why don't deserve to exist? For a typical (note here I said typica) middle aged woman to wear this stuff would, objectively, be a travesty, don't you agree?

It is so true stuff in stores is hopeless. I echo the Theory brand shout out, especially for pants. I have multiples. Mainly I buy only from one of the very big second hand designer places online. They provide the exact measurements of each garment and the selection is huge, but usually only one in each size.

All of these apparently young (?) women posting about style and the "dcum fraus" sound ignorant. Trendy, cheap clothes do not look good and they don't last. I'm 27, btw.

If you are just looking for some normal clothes that aren't stupidly expensive and look reasonably fashionable, buy some thing from Madewell and Everlane. Grana is another good suggestion.

I think Loft has some decent stuff, too - their pants are actually pretty good (and I have a horrible time finding pants).

There ugly sh*t - or, more high fashion than an ordinary person is after - at all these places but also a lot of reasonable basics.

NP. I am young at heart (47). If you spent enough time here and saw the shoes and dresses posted along with the insistence on pantyhose you would get why people are calling these women fraus.

There is nothing wrong with this top posted earlier and it does not skew 14 yo.

But it would look stupid in my office. Out to dinner, maybe.
