Possible Rape at Sidwell?

Glad your sensitivity meter is turned up to high for SFS. Wish the same would apply to other schools....

If the "victim" was in an underage relationship with the "perpetrator", yes, it's highly inappropriate and it's clear that neither student is really a fit for the school. The best thing is for the school to make a clean break. Good riddance to them.

Those halls would be pretty empty if the school got rid of all the sexually active kids. This is 2016, not 1816.

62% of high school seniors have engaged in sexual intercourse. http://www.advocatesforyouth.org/publications/publications-a-z/413-adolescent-sexual-behavior-i-demographics

This means that 38% have not. And the 62% also includes many who try it once and realize they made a mistake. I actually think this number is encouraging. No, far from ALL hs kids are having sex, despite what many would want us to believe

And believe it or not, there are mature and well-adjusted teens who are in healthy relationships that include sex. That's not so bad.

Any suspensions or worse have to be reported.

It is not good at the high school level.

This isn't a job for spin. The school can't say much more than it has at this point, other than that they are fully cooperating with a police investigation and cannot comment on an ongoing investigation.

Thank you, and i, for one, apologize for my part in the SS discussion. I actually thought better of what I posted right after and tried to delete it but was unable to. Thank you for being sensitive to the issues in this thread.

-1,000,000 A million times "NO" to this!!! Don't get me wrong, it happens, I did it. But it's not "healthy" and it is "bad". Too many ramifications...

Totally admirable that this girl was brave enough to go
To
The police by 11 pm. It's scary to report a rape and im impressed she reirted it this quickly. And the secret service are there to protect the obama girls not to hear rape accusations.

Looks like Sidwell has joined the thread and is desperate to stop any side talk.
Well, the upside, Sidwell: Contracts went out to new families! This won't impact your numbers!
private schools care about one thing: $$$$$$$$$$ and reputation.
So there will be Push back from Sidwell.

You seem to be relishing the fact that a young girl has been traumatized. What kind of person turns this horror into an admissions issue? You need psychological help.

Goodness, PP, you are part of the problem here. "Has been traumatized"? There have been too many cases of false accusations against alleged rapists (Duke lacrosse and the UVA fraternity, just to name two that came to mind, not to mention how many guys were eventually cleared years later by new DNA evidence) to immediately jump to any conclusions. There is more than one young life at stake here and it is more responsible to wait for actual facts.

So what is the appropriate age for sex? In college? I think it depends on the circumstance and the kid. I would much prefer my child to have her first sexual experience in the context of a health high school relationship than as part of the college hook-up culture. At a certain point, chronological age is not the determinative factor. An 18-year old high school senior, could be more mature than a 19 year old college freshman.

It's incredibly brave. This seems to have been handled correctly on all fronts.

It is odd that the police released this information to the paper before an investigation was done, <24hours from time of the allegation.

This is true. Although in the independent school world, it's relatively uncommon for a high-ranking administrator to leave in the middle of the school year. Usually they wait until the end of the year, or at least until a search is well underway.

Communications is about more than "spin." There needs to be communication with the parents about what's going on - including whether or not an accused rapist is going to be walking the halls of the school alongside their kids. And there needs to be a strategy developed for how the school is going to handle matters if one of their seniors is arrested and charged with rape. If you're interested in reading about how a poor communications strategy can impact a school, check out this month's Vanity Fair about the St. Paul's sexual assault.
