Honestly, I think you're wasting your time. Enrollment in the Madison pyramid is relatively stable and FCPS will have bigger issues to address than making sure every kid in the Town of Vienna, which does not own any schools like the City of Fairfax, can go to both Thoreau and Madison. If you really wanted to do this, it might involve lobbying Pat Hynes to support the following: - move every kid in the Town of Vienna now at either Wolftrap or Westbriar over to Vienna ES (and move part of Vienna ES over to Cunningham Park ES if necessary); - move the part of Vienna ES outside the Town of Vienna to Freedom Hill ES and the part of the Town of Vienna at Freedom Hill over to Vienna ES; - expand the boundaries for Thoreau, so that every Town kid goes to Thoreau (can be pitched as relieving overcrowding at Kilmer); and - support the introduction of AAP at Thoreau Net result: straight feeder of Vienna ES to Kilmer/Madison and Freedom Hill ES to Kilmer/Marshall, and straight feeder of every Town kid to Thoreau/Madison. There would still be split feeders at other schools like Cunningham Park and Marshall Road, but that is the case today. |
Meant "straight feeder of Vienna ES to Thoreau/Madison".... |
Doesn't Cunningham Park all goes to Thoreau and then splits to Madison and Marshall? I thought some of Stenwood went to Thoreau too, but might be mistaken. I'm not sure why those families want to stay with Thoreau as their middle school and then move to Marshall. Thoreau is closer and sometimes even in their backyard, but Thoreau and Kilmer are two other schools about 1 mile apart from each other. I'd rather go to middle school with kids going to my high school. |
Vienna ES and Freedom Hill have very strange boundaries. The boundary should probably just be changed to align with the high school boundary. I think the same amount of kids go to Vienna ES and then to Marshall as the amount of kids who attend Freedom Hill and then go onto Madison. |
There is no way I would support having only AAP kids attending Madison go to Thoreau instead of Kilmer. The percentage of Madison kids at Kilmer has already dropped lower than is acceptable to me. The boundaries should either align with the high school or be significant split such as 70/30 or 50/50. |
So if the projections are correct and the Marshall pyramid is going to grow much faster now than the Madison pyramid (a big reversal from prior years), move the parts of Town of Vienna now at Kilmer to Thoreau, send all of Thoreau to Madison, send all of Kilmer to Marshall, and let Thoreau have its own AAP center. But you'd still want to look at the elementary school assignments, because otherwise you'd be eliminating split feeders at the middle/high school levels while creating some odd ones at the elementary school level. |
Does anyone know why they don't think about making Colin Powell a center instead as Poplar Tree and keep Poplar Tree AAP kids in GBW since it is closer to GBW and busing is easier than Colin Powell? |
They identified that as a potential option as well, but Powell already has a big enrollment (almost 960 kids this year) whereas Poplar Tree is under 600. |

[quote]So if the projections are correct
Don't have much experience with FCPS, do you? |
Don't have much experience with FCPS, do you? Ignore the projections, then. Just look at the current enrollments in the Madison and Marshall pyramids, and figure out whether that type of realignment that was being discussed (all Town of Vienna kids to Thoreau/Madison, all of Thoreau to Madison, all of Kilmer to Marshall, and AAP at Thoreau) would have a negative impact on any of the schools involved. It clearly would be a good thing to balance the enrollments at Kilmer and Thoreau, and it doesn't seem like it would have a negative impact on either Madison or Marshall. Each would both gain and lose a few neighborhoods. But, again, it's all hypothetical, in response to the posters who asked how this could happen or complained about the current feeder patterns. If FCPS is dealing with bigger issues, it won't get around to something like this any time soon. |

The heat maps presentation slides (used by Kevin Sneed in the work session) are now posted on BoardDocs.

I do not understand zoning since houses on Bebe court, Veronica lane , Marshall crown lane are zoned in GBW where as houses near poplar tree , autumn glory way and walney road are zoned to poplar tree. Any idea why? |
|
Stringfellow is one of the roads that divides the zones for the base school. So the houses across and beyond stringfellow road that includes autumn glory way, poplar tree etc., are zoned for poplar tree regularly and GBW for aap.
|
Yes, half of Stenwood students go to Thoreau and the other half go to Klimer. But they all meet back up at Marshall. Go figure... |
| Can anyone please post the link to the proposed changes? I looked at the FCPS website and could not find the information. |
