16:31 here: I looked at this again and the documents suggest that the movement of kids who might be moved from Kilmer AAP to a new Thoreau AAP center would be "AAP students residing within the Thoreau MS attendance area" currently at Kilmer AAP (main summary document at p. 15). I don't know how that could possibly involve 250 students (see Attachment C - Map 10 at p. 11). Most Thoreau kids go the the Jackson AAP center, not Kilmer. The only exception seems to be the Kilmer AAP kids at Freedom Hill and Stenwood who have Thoreau as their base school, and I don't think anywhere close to 250 kids fall in that category, since Kilmer is the base school for most Freedom Hill and Stenwood kids. That's what made me think this option must involve moving other Kilmer AAP kids to Thoreau. Guess the actual details would emerge later if that option got some real traction.
There are also AAP kids at Wolftrap Elementary who will go to Kilmer, as their AAP Center, then back to Madison. It'd be great if they made Thoreau the AAP Center for all Town of Vienna kids for space/capacity reasons, given the overcrowding at Kilmer with the AAP students.
How can we get the traction to align the Town of Vienna? Would contacting the town work? petition? The current zoning doesn't make sense and splits kids too much.
Honestly, I think you're wasting your time. Enrollment in the Madison pyramid is relatively stable and FCPS will have bigger issues to address than making sure every kid in the Town of Vienna, which does not own any schools like the City of Fairfax, can go to both Thoreau and Madison. If you really wanted to do this, it might involve lobbying Pat Hynes to support the following: - move every kid in the Town of Vienna now at either Wolftrap or Westbriar over to Vienna ES (and move part of Vienna ES over to Cunningham Park ES if necessary); - move the part of Vienna ES outside the Town of Vienna to Freedom Hill ES and the part of the Town of Vienna at Freedom Hill over to Vienna ES; - expand the boundaries for Thoreau, so that every Town kid goes to Thoreau (can be pitched as relieving overcrowding at Kilmer); and - support the introduction of AAP at Thoreau Net result: straight feeder of Vienna ES to Kilmer/Madison and Freedom Hill ES to Kilmer/Marshall, and straight feeder of every Town kid to Thoreau/Madison. There would still be split feeders at other schools like Cunningham Park and Marshall Road, but that is the case today.
Meant "straight feeder of Vienna ES to Thoreau/Madison"....
Vienna ES and Freedom Hill have very strange boundaries. The boundary should probably just be changed to align with the high school boundary. I think the same amount of kids go to Vienna ES and then to Marshall as the amount of kids who attend Freedom Hill and then go onto Madison.
