Last winter I called to tell them that some of the roads were terrible and there was a random onslaught of snow. A few minutes later they reported that the weather was fine and traffic was flowing well. I have never been so irritated.
I actually like most of their voices. Kojo is not my favorite, but long live Diane Rehm! |
The one I really can't stand is Meymo Lyons. She either sounds drunk or saracastic. On some days, she's so bad with her affected sing-songy speech, that I can't even listen. If I'm at work, I tear my ear phones off! It's like nails on a chalkboard. She grates on my nerves. I can't stop ranting, she bugs me so. Ha ha. Do you want to torture some one? Have them listen to Meymo Lyons for hours. (I know bad joke).

| Meymo Lyons is seriously unstable. I know from an insider that she acts (and looks) the way she sounds on the radio: like a raging lunatic. She is famous for calling her female staff "pretty" and for saying that their journalism degrees are worth nothing. She and her minion are pretty much trailer park divas who lucked up on decent jobs. As long as Meymo is there, DO NOT DONATE! It's a hell hole with her at the helm. |
| I just googled her and Meymo Lyons has a crazy hairstyle! Is she really that mean? If what the PP said is true it would lower my opinion of WAMU/ NPR. I sort of idealize public radio and can't bear to think that in the background the manager is degrading people. |
When she first came on the radio, and until finally I looked her up, I thought Meymo was a cub reporter and kept waiting for someone to tell her to tone down the weird inflections. Seemed like such an over-the-top affectation. Trying to be kind, I thought that maybe it was an attempt to distinguish herself. I, too, am very surprised to find that she is not only experienced but in a position of authority. |
I just came across this whole thread after googling "annoying WAMU announcers" this morning. These comments are funny and reaffirming So glad to see so many people feel the same way about I'M Michael Pope! Although I think maybe he's received some coaching on that. There's a new person...maybe within the past couple of months?...she's not a reporter but (not sure what the correct title is) typical makes the sponsor announcements at the end of a segment or show. Whoever she is I have to hit mute every time. I don't know how to describe in words the tone of her voice - it's monotone but when she finishes a sentence it's something like "this is WAMUUUU" Someone out there must know who Im talking about. She's maddening and her bosses need to either voice coach her, or find a replacement.

Wow, I'm shocked at the Meymo Lyons photos. I thought she was an 85-year-old radio pioneer that they kept on staff out of sympathy.
How did she ever get this job? Worst radio voice ever! |
I'm the OP of this thread, and I know exactly who you're talking about! I can't stand her either. Every phrase ends with the exact same down-turned inflection. But seriously it's Elliot Francis that is ruining everything for me lately. I have to mute it when he's on. |
| I need to google Meymo Lynons now. I cant stand Eleanor Beardsly. I can't figure out exaclty what it is but maybe its just her actual voice. So Annoying! |
You could have made that whole argument w/o having to reference trailer parks. You have not only lost me, but I am going to donate in her name. |
I always hoped that Diane Rehm was unavailable on a particular day and that Susan Page would be replacing her. Diane Rehm would impose herself in the show, fawning over one guest, scolding another, and generally being a fussbudget. Please someone convince her that it is time for her to retire. |
I totally agree!!! She over pronounces words, i envision her mouth stretching way beyond norm, it borders NY 'valley girl' talk.. who are these people responsible for selecting voices??? Surely they are heard by many through several interviews..YUK!! |
|
here's my list of 'not suitable for radio voices': Armando is such a light weight with a mouth full of gummy bears;
matt Laslow, I can't even find words for why such a dislike: he whispers like he's telling a secret, his voice is too singsongy The newest female in-between-shows announcer sounds whiny and, well, smarmy Zoey Chase just needs to find another career Mike Comidas (sp?) has a GREAT voice and needs to do something other than traffic... And, the female who announces promotions who sounds like Shelly LonG is very pleasant. Does NPR read this?? I hope so....when newbies are hired, they need to have a public vote!!!!!! |
She always sounds like she just got back from a 5 martini lunch. |
| Who are the two female reporters who do metro news (I think)? Their vocal fry is so strong that I have to switch to another station; hence I don't know their names. I can't believe they have on-air positions. |
