WAMU Cuts Elliott Francis
American University public radio news talker WAMU, 88.5, has laid off afternoon news anchor Elliott Francis. He used to be a Channel 7/WJLA reporter and anchor.

One pet peeve for me is in the morning, they never identify the city as "Washington" anymore. It's "Downtown DeeCee," DeeCee this and DeeCee that. I even heard them say "when Congress meets again in Deecee,' when the name of the federal capital is not "DeeCee." In the afternoon, it's different, a smattering of "Nation's Capital," "Washington" and "DC" when referrring to our local ("Dysfunctional City") government,.

Actually the official name is the District of Columbia. There is no official mention of Washington anywhere, after Georgetown and Washington were combined into a unified District of Columbia a long time ago.

And when you alphabetize states and territories, DC comes after Delaware, not the Virgin Islands or Washington.

I can't stand Tamika Smith, who appears to have replaced Elliott Francis.

She seems to not read any of her copy in advance or listen to herself while she reads, resulting in weird pauses, mispronounced words, and wrong words. My favorite was when she substituted 'descendents' for "dissidents" when talking about China. What she said made NO sense but she read it that way at least three times.

So unprofessional and irritating.

Razia Iqbal is the worst. She screams when she talks and she constantly interrupts!

Eleanor Beardsly has the weirdest nasal inflection. I hate when she covers a story. I want her to see an ENT or a voice coach to fix her sound.

Elliott Francis was laid off? I feel bad about anyone getting laid off but always wondered how he could have an on air job and make so many mistakes? He would rarely say a sentence w/o making a mistake.

I actually liked Eliott Francis, sad to hear he got laid off.

I agree on this. I'm Indian and Kavita, to me, sounds very try hard.

So glad Elliott is gone. A news reader should be able to read. And leave his trit little opinions out of it. God, he used to enrage me, to an admittedly crazy degree.

Concur... he was quite possibly the worst newsreader I've heard in my 60+ years, constant mistakes and stumbles. His most grating verbal tic was using "detail" instead of 'details" when teasing an upcoming report, as in "Michael Pope will have detail..."
