So I fully understand that those from the area who send their kids to private would be perceived as such- even by people who aren't old money. I'm not from old money and actually have the resources to live in the nouveau riche areas but don't want the negative taint on me or my kids or, even worse, my kids to get caught up in it.

NP here: Which parts of NoVA are considered "nouveaux riche" - I am curious. This thread is hilarious!

Pretty much all of it.

Why do people treat MD parents who send kids to DC school different than VA, when most of VA suburbs, think Arlington and Alexadria are closer to the schools than CC, Bethesda, Mont Co? I don't get why Md aren't consider carpetbaggers or climbers or whatever the word of the hour is?

And how many people who live in NW are actually from DC? And when that person who lived in NW, say Georgetown, move to CC for more space what happens to their classification? I would much rather cross a bridge then go outside the Beltway, but that is just me!

All of Chevy Chase and most of Bethesda is actually inside the Beltway. I'd venture to guess that more of McLean is outside than Bethesda. With the exceptions of St. Patrick's and GDS Lower School, it's much easier to get to/from most of the NW privates from MD than VA.

As for why VA is considered tacky and MD isn't by NWDC'ers... I don't know, it just is.

You live in VA so that you can keep your neighborhoods white.

This has to be a serious troll, no way did this happen. Fwiw a good friend of mine who lived in Bethesda refused to move to Georgetown because it wasn't Jewish enough for her. I was floored. All types of people have judgments and sterotypes of other types of people. I am also very surprised by all the people who claim to be so liberal but in practice are only open minded about others with like views, they aren't open minded or tolerant at all, unless you are super liberal just like them. If your view is different, moderate, republican, whatever, they dont tolerate it and shove theirs down your throat. seems like an oxymoron to me.

BTW I live in NW, born and bred baby, so I win!

St Pats and GDS lower school are maybe 10 minutes from Bethesda. Westmoreland circle to Dalecarlia to Loughboro to MacArthur. Or just down MacArthur. It takes maybe a few more minutes to get through the lights and across Chain Bridge into McLean or N Arlington.

Because DC and Maryland and basically one contiguous neighborhood. Spring valley just rolls into Chevy chase. AU park into besthesda, 16th st in silver spring. The people are the same.

Just so you know, McLean doesn't equal all of Virginia. Inside the Beltway there is Arlington and Alexandria, and don't get me started on what we say about new money, McMasion Maryland, who if lives in CC or Bethesda always drops the bomb of how close in it is, even without asking. it is like going to Harvard and the Hbomb. Just stop. Bethesda is chain after chain after chain. and then there is Wisconsin, Friendship Heights, where chains and new money came to die! yeah, I went there.

True, I forgot about that one, but DC has honorable government and is corruption free, oh wait, I lose!

You still don't get it.

It's because people who live in VA are choosing to live in a basically conservative state, and are choosing the land of broad lawns and narrow minds over the urban experience of living in DC. It has nothing to do with proximity. It's all about mindset.

I think you are the one with a problematic mindset. You seem to think that Virginians who send their kids to DC for school are "social climbers." What? I do not rely on my children's schools for social advancement. That is insane. Frankly, I loathe "society." And I say that as someone who is a card-carrying descendent of high society whose mother was disappointed that she chose not to make her debut at the St. Cecilia. Yes, in fact - we do exist in Virginia. Some of us even laugh at the ones on the thread calling themselves "old money." Honey, that is nothing to us. We are qualified for the DAR, honoring our ancestors who were officers in the Continental Army. Sure, they also owned plantations and slaves, but no one is perfect. We lost all that to the carpet baggers (and shame on whoever appropriated that term to describe Southerners. Honestly, please keep your history straight). But we never lost our dedication to ensuring our children got the best education available.

I don't pretend to speak for all of the other posters, but I, personally, do not think that VAs who send their kids to DC for school are social climbers. That's not the correct term. I think that they are materialistic, self-absorbed people who basically want it both ways... the elite education, along with the suburban lifestyle. They want the "best" of the city but are not willing to really invest themselves in an urban lifestyle because, god forbid, they might miss something on that giant screen TV. Or not have a place to park their SUV. Or have to live too close to their neighbors, and actually have to speak to them in the morning, rather than tune out on their I-phone.

You know, but I've lived in DC, Arlington, and a real city (Chicago), and had by far the most interaction with my neighbors in Arlington. It's clear from this thread who has been open-minded enough to actually see what life might be like in other places and who sees the world as a New Yorker cover-style hot mess of stereotypes.

OP: To VA for lots of outdoor space and to DC for the schools like I had in Massachusetts. What answers are there that I will find?

But this is exactly the point. Why do you need "lots of space," outdoors or not? How many people live at your house... 20? Or is it that you need room for all of your "toys" -- your pool, your media room, your tacky furniture, your cars. THIS is what DC people turn up their noses at.

OP here: Whoa! Hold on! House is understated and tasteful. Uh, no media room. Outdoor (not indoor) space for 3 kids with dogs, frisbees, treehouse (no pool). You find that fresh air is good for children and being outside is quite healthy. So sorry, what you describe above does not apply here

Because we think it is good for kids to have lots of space outdoors to run and play that is just outside our house And we don't like to be squashed like sardines in an old, tiny 3 bedroom colonial in which the third bedroom is really the size of a coat closet.

You don't care for these things? Great. Different strokes, and all that. But maligning all people who live in Va is a little weird.

There are tons of big houses with lots of space in DC. You probably can't afford it. That's why you have this inferiority complex. I mean after all you started this thread. Sorry but you and your kids will always be considered as va carpet baggers. Yes even parents act like we're in high school.

I am not OP....and OP said his/her house was not large I think.

OP: No complex personally - want to ensure children stay happy - and so I raised it - written in a way to catch attention. We are a lovely balanced family that have lived all over the world and went to the best schools and want the same for our children. "Big houses" are not important, regardless of what we can "afford" - we love the children running around, simple. And socially - sorry we have no interest in "climbing" - as I said, we don't need to! But this thread has been interesting!
