Within the world of ABET, BSCompE has a lot of course overlap with BSCompSci. WM already has a solid CS program, although it focuses more on software than on computing systems.

The main missing piece for the BS CompE would be logic programming (for an FPGA/ASIC using VHDL/Verilog), which could be handled by hiring maybe 1-2 junior tenure-track faculty members. Clearly the smart play on accreditation would be to add BS CompE degree program and then get both CS and CompE (and any other degrees within scope for ABET) accredited in a single pass. The work to accredit 2-3 programs is only slightly higher than to get one program accredited.

(NB: Not sure, but AFAIK, Physics would be outside ABET’s scope.)

I know there are a number of anti-engineering faculty, this could be a way to slip all of that under the radar for sure

Doesn't sound like they "turned it down" - sounds like there was a public outcry that it should be part of ODU. W&M's loss.

Faculty didn't think that it made sense to have a med school an hour away from main campus is what I heard. Even vims isn't that far.

I am a local to SE VA. WM faculty I know all say that WM generally (and they specifically) wanted EVMS and that over time EVMS would have moved classes north across the HRBT. EVMS folks wanted WM over ODU, because WM would boost the EVMS prestige.

Analogously, ODU wanted EVMS to boost ODU’s prestige as a public university with a medical school.

In the end, it was a political decision in Richmond, not a case of rejection by WM.

No, the exploratory committee's recommendation was to not proceed because synergies would be difficult to achieve.

I think Adelaide has submarine engineering, Sheffield has been working on forged titanium construction techniques. W&M would likely be working on things like business/supply chain/government relations.
