What a weird post.

I’m from Florida and that true. -redneck striver who got out

Sounds like you have a lot of insecurities linked to your upbringing. Pretty sad for a middle aged person to be so stuck.

Absolutely true, I have had lots of counseling to deal with my rough upbringing, and the difficulties that I had to overcome to have a life in the DMV. would not recommend Florida for that reason, as you’ll be going to school with my peers from similar backgrounds

You are still stereotyping a state you left 20+ years ago and kids you have never met. I'm in FL and I'm not sure what a "redneck striver" is. Everyone I know is from outside Florida/outside the US.

Why in the world do you think I left 20 years ago? It’s true, but I still go back and have family and friends there. It’s not like it’s had a renaissance - the people who are moving to Florida post pandemic are of similar type.

Maybe you know Miami? That’s a different state entirely than the rest of Florida, which is more Mississippi and Georgia

I’m from FL too with the sibs who went to UF and while harsh, imo there is a nugget of truth to what the pp is saying. I still have lots of family and friends there and go back often, but I’m from a wealthy coastal part of Florida which generally speaking might as well be a different world from the interior of FL (minus parts of Orlando).

So you are from the lower 1/3 of the state near Miami or Ft Myers?

The ROFL is very redneck MAGA, especially Orlando and Tampa and Tallahassee.

NP- This is a population density map, not a party affiliation/voting map...

Right, we were talking about where people are from, ie are redneck just from the empty green bits.

But I know many people in Orlando and Tallahassee who are rabid maga.

UF and Gainesville is quite progressive in general, but since today’s youth are leaning right and the bias implicit in the state, that is likely changing.

Tampa has some liberal leanings but plenty of right wing influence.

I live in one of the cities you’re calling MAGA and I really wish it was, but unfortunately not. I’m happy for you to tell people we’re all maga though. We don’t need any more liberals moving here!

You’re probably talking about Tallahassee, and that’s probably true. It’s a capital city so lots of government employers but I know that everything else in the panhandle is super red.

My kid got into UF and UMD. We are UMD residents. At the end of the day, UF didn’t make sense. Higher cost, possible huge online classes, and a hellish commute to get there. Didn’t seem worth it. Went to UMD

Thanks for the update. My DS got into our school UW-Madison. Just accepted UF. We thought it worth it.

UFAlumni generations of us

I am in Florida right now
I have already moved our $100,000s of millions in academic scholarships monies out of UG the day after DT won .
I am here now to help my sister remove our family trust which supports the School of Engineering . It will not show up in the budget for this quarter because monies were already spent. Next quarter hundreds of millions gone. By Engineering staff for fall … etc
Oh dear Ben Sasse about where funding was coming from special projects funding now dead .
My sister was MAGA til Trump used Russia talking points.

She was our last hold out of five siblings. It was joyful to sign those papers
.
Do not send your kids for engineering funding is now gone

some of the people on this board really need intervention. This is a college discussion board so please take your political nonsense talk elsewhere. Thank you.

Smart move. Better school, too, if we're being honest.

Have previously lived in Fl. And one of my children graduated hs in Fl. UF has a strong rep in Florida. Typically seen as the smart kids school in the state. Plenty of highly successful & influential alums abound in state. Strong school spirit & esprit de corp & network. A desirable admit in-state. Has become a difficult admit for umc kids from Miami, Tampa, Orlando & Jax. Guessing well-rounded 1450/33-ish floor & near perfect uw gpa for those umc kids from one or the big cities to be competitive for admissions. Plenty of bright 1500+/34+ kids who didn't get into an ivy nor duke/vandy &/or opted to utilize their Bright Futures(ie zero tuition) program. Fl child's fellow hs classmates who went UF seem to be wholly successful & happy. Seem to love it, have a good social experience as well as strong academic ops & challenges. Friends from other parts of the country can't/don't believe me when i them great students go to UF.

UF acceptance rate now in the teens. Hard admit for sure. Seems to be a very nice combo of great academics and great sports. Men's basketball team a national contender this year as well and the football environment in The Swamp is special. I'm sure application numbers will only continue to grow as well, if that's possible.
