What are everyone's thoughts on UF (University of Florida)?

This thread is like a few people from a MAGA Rochester suburb insisting over and over again that all of NY state is ultra red full of MAGA homogenous country people and that the whole state is a cesspool to be avoided.

This past year, there were 90,000 applicants (for about 15,000 acceptances to make a class of around 6500). The school has many opportunities (both for learning and for having fun). Politically, it is a bit more on the liberal side - but it has a good mix of everyone.

Leads the country in opportunity for online classes.

I love UF. What a great school. Beautiful campus and a beautiful huge Medical Center. From personal experience, awesome for opportunities if your kid is fortunate enough to get in and wants to be on the pre-med track. Oh, and the awesome sports teams are not bad either. Congrats to all that got accepted!

Here’s the difference, that would be false because the governor of NY is a Democrat as is both its senators, and the state has voted blue in presidential elections for some time. To say Florida is MAGA, on the other hand, would be correct, as it has twice given its presidential votes to Trump, has a super conservative governor and has been represented by Republican senators for years. Fiction v. Reality, thus your analogy fails.

By your own standards you are now MAGA since the US elected Trump.

Oh my, are you an alum of the University of Florida? This might be the most persuasive evidence in the whole thread about the quality of the education.

You can't have it both ways. Either reject the analogy or embrace it.

I wouldn't waste time going back forth with this poster. They obviously have some weird agenda against Florida.

Dude, you still upset your NY state analogy was a bust? Let’s review. Florida is controlled by MAGA republicans, NY is controlled by democrats. No mention there of the political affiliation of any particular voter. If you want to continue with that logic, correct to say that the U.S. government is controlled by MAGA republicans, but not correct to say that I am a MAGA voter. See, easy as pie.

Keep up. This entire thread is posters pretending that all of FL is MAGA and "off" based on MAGA in power.

Nope, wrong again. Part of it is about Florida having a long history of attracting oddballs, no political affiliation attached. Another is about the Florida government being controlled by MAGA, and specifically Ron DeSantis, who would be responsible for covering any shortfall after federal budget cuts that affect the university, and has previously done things that affect the schools’s ability to offer certain curriculum. Yet another is the influx of MAGA voters during and after Covid that have increased the size of the Republican majority in Florida. You may take issue with the first, as it is opinion, but the other two statements are fact.

Anyone with personal experience? What are the pros and cons? Is it easy to get back and forth for breaks? I've heard that the dorms kind of suck (i.e. communal showers) - but that its sort of like a "right of passage."

What is your DC's in state choice?

What a weird post.

I’m from Florida and that true. -redneck striver who got out

Sounds like you have a lot of insecurities linked to your upbringing. Pretty sad for a middle aged person to be so stuck.

Absolutely true, I have had lots of counseling to deal with my rough upbringing, and the difficulties that I had to overcome to have a life in the DMV. would not recommend Florida for that reason, as you’ll be going to school with my peers from similar backgrounds

You are still stereotyping a state you left 20+ years ago and kids you have never met. I'm in FL and I'm not sure what a "redneck striver" is. Everyone I know is from outside Florida/outside the US.

Why in the world do you think I left 20 years ago? It’s true, but I still go back and have family and friends there. It’s not like it’s had a renaissance - the people who are moving to Florida post pandemic are of similar type.

Maybe you know Miami? That’s a different state entirely than the rest of Florida, which is more Mississippi and Georgia

I’m from FL too with the sibs who went to UF and while harsh, imo there is a nugget of truth to what the pp is saying. I still have lots of family and friends there and go back often, but I’m from a wealthy coastal part of Florida which generally speaking might as well be a different world from the interior of FL (minus parts of Orlando).

So you are from the lower 1/3 of the state near Miami or Ft Myers?

The ROFL is very redneck MAGA, especially Orlando and Tampa and Tallahassee.

Windermere, Lake Mary, and Winter Park have been hoisting Confederate flags? Give me a break.
