Critical details are not hairsplitting. Sorry that it hurts your ego though.

Another fare evader gets violent and hostile, this time at Rockville Metro Station: https://mocoshow.com/2024/12/23/fare-evader-attackers-officer-at-rockville-metro-station/

A Metro Transit Police Department (MTPD) officer at the Rockville Station arrested a suspect for fare evasion and assault after the suspect threatened and pushed the officer.

According to Metro, “Last night, just before 8:00 p.m., an MTPD officer was conducting fare enforcement at Rockville Station when the officer observed an adult male climb over the fare gate without paying the Metro fare. When the officer attempted to stop the suspect, the suspect threatened the officer and proceeded to push the officer. The officer pepper-sprayed the suspect and attempted to detain him when a brief struggle between the officer and the suspect began.

The suspect was able to escape and flee the area. Additional MTPD and Rockville PD officers canvassed the nearby area where MTPD officers ultimately located the suspect. The suspect was placed under arrest for assault on a police officer (APO) and fare evasion. The officer was not injured.”

Looks like the suspect was trying to evade the MetroRail fare, not MetroBus. I wonder how MetroBus enforcement is going.

Nice! Way to turn that into a felony!

I got a 50 euro fine once for failing to validate my ticket on a Paris bus, and I had a paid ticket in my hand, just not validated on the machine which I didn't know I had to do. Why can't we enforce fares here? If Paris can do it, why can't DC?

I feel sorry for the bus drivers. Enforcement on the subway is much easier and I am glad to see it ramping up. Also, crack down on the weed smoking on the trains.

They are really ramping up. I've seen uncover law enforcement riding the subway and not just one, a whole group.

WMATA is enforcing bus fares. Were you born yesterday?

Totally! Same experience

I really hope that this crackdown on fare evaders works on both the subway and buses. If there is no punishment for people, more people will do it and the prices will go up. Why do the paying customers have to pay for non-paying?

Road road taxes. Bus fares are stupid.

I wonder if this incident will make more Metro employees hesitant to do fare enforcement since they're putting themselves at risk of serious harm.

Metro employees aren't stupid.

Fighting over fares is the police's job.

Trying to collect fares for busses is just.a bad idea in general. If you actually enforce it, it brings loading to a crawl. There just isn't space and time to do it. Make it as free as local road.
