Madison, Marshal and McLean are closer to Springhill Metro than Langley. What is the obsession with Langley.

Most neighborhoods zoned to Langley are closer to other schools than to Langley. No reason why this complex couldn’t be assigned to Langley.

I don’t think this is true. You are only talking about certain part of great falls.

We are zoned for Langley and on the McLean/Great Falls border and Langley is our closest high school.

Anything in Great Falls, Reston, Herndon, or Vienna zoned to Langley is closer to another high school than to Langley, and some neighborhoods in McLean zoned to Langley are also closer to McLean.

Again, no reason why the new affordable housing in Tysons/Vienna off Spring Hill Road couldn’t be assigned to Langley. Y’all always come up with phony reasons to justify the continued segregation.

DP. No one is "coming up with" anything of the sort. We are simply responding to your wacky insistence and obsession with a school your own kids don't even attend.

And if you want to do battle with FCPS re: segregation, maybe focus your efforts on getting rid of AAP centers.

You shit a brick any time someone (and there have been multiple posters on this thread) points out how Langley could have even a little diversity. Hilarious.

I'm not the PP, but we've already told you -- it's not about diversity, it's about property value. A neighborhood being rezoned from Langley to Herndon will lose value; it's as simple as that. Nobody wants their home to lose value, so they will do anything they can to keep the neighborhood in the Langley district.

Agree with all the prior posters that there are many good schools with less expensive housing.

If your child is a great student, there are many schools where they will flourish. If you child is average student, a school like Langley might actually offer fewer advantages and a risk of being lost in the shuffle.

Which got me thinking - do families regret being so focused on a single pyramid/school at the cost of $/housing/commute/logistics?

FWIW, we did the opposite - stayed at the less prestigious/lower scores/lower SES school. It worked out great in the end - kept our money and our kids thrived, but there were definitely some times I worried that we were not "sacrificing" enough for the "best" education.

OP. We are looking for a HS school with good test scores that we can work to afford. If Kids work hard to be average that is okay. If they work hard to go to any local state school like GMU or if they some courses from NOVA and have no pressure of student loans is okay. Hard work habits and study any major is okay.

So we are looking for public HS with good test scores to require hard work habits for kids from HS.

OP. Thank you for helpful suggestions for HS schools and neighborhoods.

You can get a HS for good test scores for budget of 900. Theres more houses for sale in the spring and summer season.

You will townhouse or house options in your budget of 850 to 900K for a HS with good test scores. But don’t assume that big boundaries will give you cheaper options if you are willing to live far from the school.

Yes, as you say, there are multiple posters on this thread and you just keep responding as if you're talking to one person. You still haven't told us which high school your kids go to and why you're so obsessed with Langley.

Serious question - why is it “obsessed” for county residents to point out how the county could make use of surplus capacity at Langley and increase the diversity there at the same time? We all pay taxes, not just the rich Langley residents.

What high school do your kids attend? As a county resident, I'd like to know so I can research all the things your school has that mine does not.

Will be curious to see if the next school board takes a fresh look at boundaries. The new rep for Langley is from the Herndon area, not Great Falls.

NP. Too many off topic replies here.

Topic is best neighborhoods for OP for a small house or townhouse around 900 with HS with good test scores.

NP, also looking for next year.

How TF does Fairfax County get away with modern school segregation?

It isn’t segregation. If you look at a map and where Langley High is located, there really aren’t any poor areas to pull from. It is in a very expensive location. Across the river is MD and to the east is DC. West is Great Falls and then you start going into McLean High areas.

There have been a few boundary studies in recent years about moving some families to Langley from McLean High.

Another boundary study was done recently for Kent Gardens but they didn’t touch the high school zoning, only moved elementary schools.

Langley's map looks like one of the manhandled political districts. Like he'll Langley's geography couldn't possibly incorporate one condo or apartment building. Plenty in Tysons to pick from.

Many/most of those apartments are expensive — especially if you include the condo fees! I live in a modest home in Great Falls, and the mortgage on those apartments is more than my own!

Most of them are rentals, not condos, and many are moderate-income. You people really are ridiculous in the excuses you come up with to keep Langley segregated.

In your dream scenario, unless they are rent-controlled, those apartments will have their rent increase based on the Langley zoning, so your problem doesn’t really get solved, good try though.

I find it telling that you rail against supposed discrimination with the stereotyping “you people” language above. Most people don’t care at all about keeping “Langley segregated” and just want their kids in a good school. I’m guessing you just own a condo in Tyson’s and want it to go up in value. Best of luck to you.

They can't raise the rent on county-mandated affordable housing. There is 1 condo building in that part of Tysons to over a dozen apartment buildings. Even so, condos at 600K would be a steal compared to homes starting at $1 million and up.

600k is not exactly diversifying Langley. Other schools have section 8 building within their catchments, not 600k condos that people pretend are filled with poor people

In other words, these are just people who are less rich than they want to be whining about injustice.

So why are you worried about Langley, a school all the way across the county that doesn’t affect you in any way?

Such a totally bizarre response. Hopefully you won’t spend the holidays fretting about “diversity” in schools your kids don’t even attend.

Funny you'd mention the holidays. The priorities of many Langley parents - keeping poor kids out and then acting as if it's the natural order of things - are about as far removed from the teachings of Jesus as one could imagine.
