What happened to average kids? Where are they?

In metro DC, Lacrosse is about as competitive a sport as exists. So I would recommend it only for kids who are very very keen on playing Lacrosse.

(One reason its so competitive is that Ivys’ athletic coaches have leeway to admit a few extra students who play Lacrosse [or certain other sports] well. Those Lacrosse-specific admits do not count against a given HS’s admissions quota for that Ivy. Also, there is a separate college Lacrosse to Wall Street pipeline.)
