San Franciso reparations

I can see a whole lotta violence over this nonsense.

Might be a good thing and long overdue!

California's reparations task force is preparing to recommend that the Golden State apologize and issue "down payments" to Black residents as a way to make amends for slavery and discrimination, although the state explicitly outlawed slavery when it joined the Union in 1850.

The task force, created by state legislation signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom in 2020, on Monday published more than 500 pages of documents indicating it plans to recommend California issue a formal apology for slavery and racism and consider payments of varying amounts to eligible Black Californians.

The draft report also recommends a slew of policy changes, including banning cash bail, a controversial move that some have blamed for increases in crime in areas that have adopted it.

Economists predicted in a preliminary estimate in March that California's reparations plan could cost the state over $800 billion. The task force, which consulted five economists and policy experts to arrive at the number, clarified at the time that the total didn't include compensation for property that the group says was taken unjustly or for the devaluation of Black-owned businesses.

California's total annual state budget sits at roughly $300 billion.

However, the task force's latest batch of documents, which include a draft final report and agenda items to discuss at an upcoming meeting, don't contain an overall price tag. Instead, they outline ways California could calculate how much money Black residents have lost since 1850, when the state was established, through today due to discrimination.

Critics say the reparations proposals are fiscally unmanageable for a state already facing a deficit of tens of billions of dollars and argue it doesn't make sense to implement them when California never allowed slavery.

None of this is going to happen. It's just noise. The moment this comes before a legislature or a ballot is the day California becomes a blood red Republican state. California progressives have lost the plot. It's important to remember that there are more republicans in California than in any other state in America. And when you lose typical mainstream suburban democrats who just want affordable health care, decent schools, safe neighborhoods, and a woman's right to choose, you lose California's 55 electoral votes and any hope of a democrat being elected president again. $100s of billions in reparations to a few descendants of people that lived in a state that didn't even have slavery is a lovely talking point for the hard right and the hard left. But for those inhabiting reality it's just noise pollution.

$1.2 million is an ok start.

I always assumed that California was one of the few “safe” states for black Americans fleeing the South. Not realizing until recently that it was just as racist. With that being said, anyone who believes reparations will ever be paid is delusional.

Wrong. It’s a very left wing state. This will be paid, as it should be. There may be a handful of moderate Dems in the state assembly who say know, but the margins are huge, in favor of progressives.

How, exactly?
After 2 years of massive surplus, California is facing a $24B budget deficit.
Who will magically pay for this?

The money can be arrived at creatively, so most of it does not come from taxpayers. I did notice, though, that one of the proposals is to repeal the anti-affirmative action ballot initiative. Voters voted overwhelmingly against its repeal. So that seems like a big ask.

If nothing else, this is really softening the ground for similar movements in other states and, ultimately, at the federal level. No one really has a philosophical argument against it (or is willing to state such an argument in public), so the arguments are really fall back ones like, yeah, uhhhhh, that sounds good, but the logistics, the money. The money is there, and this country can surely reasonably identify those who are entitled to payments.

That sounds like wishful thinking. It’s happening.

This country is 31 TRILLION in debt. The money is not there and having the richest Americans turn over their cash is not going to cut it.
And, newsflash..... some of those richest Americans are...... BLACK!

Sure, why not? They stick around now, even though it would be in their financial interest to relocate. And most are extremely liberal—thus, this is consistent with their values.
