Seems like a pretty nasty generalization. |
I am not at Tilden, but I think it's probably a few upset moms who's kids didn't go to that many mitzvahs upset about kids wearing sweatshirts. Our kids went to NB, and one of my kids went to a ton and the other didn't, no big deal. Who's got the problem at Tilden, the moms or the kids? |
We don't have kids in Tilden anymore and I don't know if it makes any difference between boys or girls. But you can see many Tilden parents justifying open advertisement of invitation list. What do you expect kids to do then? They are just going to copy their parents in being totally insensitive about it. This attitude just spills in other interactions. We kept it low key and did not have this clothes with name tag. Having said that, I don't think this is a singular big issue. Lack of EC after school makes a larger difference. Just my opinion. |
This thread has gone off the rails - what are the odds? There are systematic issues at Tilden that go way beyond this side show of the Mitzvah invites and sweatshirts. Since you are at NB, consider yourself lucky and listen rather than invalidate the experiences of families at Tilden. MCPS knows there is an issue- hence the new principal and the recent community meeting. It is academic, social and cultural at Tilden. Hopefully a process is underway to make change and maybe some has occurred but it is real. And the friends I have with NB kids have had a better experience. |
+1 It's not just about Mitzvah and sweatshirts. There are some real issues and that needs to be solved to stop the decline. |
But it keeps being said over and over again |
And it’s always a nasty, gossipy, misogynistic generalization, any time it’s said about a group of girls—especially one as large as an entire grade. We as adults should be better than that. |
C'mon - we're DCUM: about as close to MS as adults get to go! |
Is generalization about name tag of sweatshirt is correct or that's also gossip? I mean, is it done by majority of Jewish parents in Tilden? I am just curious because there seems to be tons of problems related with Tilden. |
I feel like this thread is a perfect example of what's "wrong" with Tilden. We have a child there (a girl, even!) and have had no problems. She loves her teachers, we've been pleased with them, there are several extracurriculars that our child is interested in, and she seems relatively safe there.
However, many of the other parents are all up in it and are super obnoxious. Not all, of course, and probably not even most. So if you're going to be that type, you'll have lots of company. If you're not, you'll either be annoyed by it, or find a way to just stay out of the drama. Our kid is bright, doing well, likes school. No complaints. |
What's special about Tilden when it comes to having more of super obnoxious type? I mean all middle schools in the area should have same distribution of type of parents. |
DP here with middle schoolers (not at Tilden). I think MS is a tough phase for lots of girls. It's a time when they're starting to focus more on friendships, their popularity, where they are on the social ladder, how they look, dress, etc. Some girls who take it to the next level start developing this mean-girl mentality. I think this is the case in all middle schools, although it might be worse in others, just depending on the year. |
It’s the “girls in this year’s 6th grade are particularly mean” comments that irk me. It’s the same sort of gossipy bad-mouthing they’re criticizing in the kids. |
Depends on what qualifies as "the area." We moved from a different part of the county, so still MCPS, and the Tilden parents are different than what we had encountered before. If you're talking about the general Rockville/Bethesda/Potomac area, then they might not be different than the other nearby schools. |
Yes, I will think Tilden should have similar set of parents, and yet Tilden has more problems than other MS's nearby. I am not sure why concentration of obnoxious types will be higher in Tilden. If Tilden has more than fair share of those parents then I would like to know the reason. |
