and you think white Hispanics are part of the URM in higher ed, and so they should have that advantage, when their skin color (and hair color in some cases) already gives them an advantage in our mostly white country?

Stating your are white and Hispanic (different questions in the common app) gives little or no URM advantage so you can stop your useless freaking out.

Who are you to tell anyone that they can' t call themselves Colombian, Mexican, or whatever because they are white. That is so absurd and ignorant. Latino is not a race. Go spend some time in Latin America and learn its history. White Latinos are not all wealthy.

I totally agree! I’ve been on this board for years and this comes up regularly in the college forums. Re: Argentines especially. Brujas, all of you.

Exactly. They are so paranoid about a white Latino taking a spot from their kid. I can assure you, there are more mediocre athletes and legacy admits than white Latinos taking spots.

Actually they'd be taking a spot from a kid who had truly suffered from discrimination based on their skin tone. Your kid taking themselves out of the "white" box only makes it one less person for the white kid to compete with.

Mestizo means mixed European and Indigenous.

I am Mestiza/Latina/Hispanic (hooray for so many labels!), and this is exactly what mestizo means. European and Indian, which covers a vast majority of Mexican/central American/south American people. You don’t need to be able to trace your lineage back to Europe and our linear just pretty diluted from any tribes but it’s where we come from.

To the people questioning whether the Argentinian player is Hispanic, he sure is. Within my own family, I have blonde hair, blue eyed cousins, who can pass is white, and I have cousins with black skin and I am brown. We are all Hispanic/Latino/Mestizo.

It’s nothing more than yet another intersectionality tool.

If a Hispanic person is a democrat, they’re a POC. If they’re a republican, they’re a white-hispanic.

So transparent and gross.

God, you are an idiot. White Hispanics don’t take themselves out of the white box in college applications. There are different questions for ethnicity and race.

Of course he is. He was born and raised in Argentina. He is latino and Hispanic. Is his family of Scottish origin? Yes, but huge swaths of Latin America have origins in Europe.

By your logic, no one born in the US is American.

ok, so then there is Asian Hispanic, Black Hispanic? But they don't offer those on the forms.

Also "American" is a nationality, "Hispanic" is not. You are confusing nationality with ethnicity and culture.

Sweet Jesus you're dumb. Yes, there are Asian and black Hispanics. You tick "Hispanic" and "Asian".

Can those with African admixture be Mestizo like Brazilian Camila McConaughey?

No, because most “white hispanics” are well-off in their countries and they tend to NOT immigrate to the US. So it’s a non-issue.

oh really, then why is that option on there? You think white Hispanics in the US face discrimination, so it's a non issue? Is Nick Fuentes Hispanic? Did he face discrimination in the US?

Are Asians from South America considered Asian Hispanic? I know some Asians who immigrated to the US from S. Am. I don't think they were given an option to pick Asian Hispanic.

Also, read a few posts back.. apparently there are many white Argentinians here.

A blue eyed blonde like McAllister doesn't have any native blood in him. Many Europeans ended up in S America around WWII and married and procreated with other Europeans there. They don't have any native american blood in them.

I have to wonder if McAllister would consider himself Hispanic. I know he considers himself Argentinian, but Hispanic? IDK.

So what would a Brazilian pick? They don't speak Spanish in Brazil. Hispanic means "Spanish speaking".

I think the federal government needs to reassess the definition of "Hispanic" given it was 1976 when they came up with this question on the census, and it was a vastly different world then.

DH's mother grew up in an orphanage in Argentina and came here as a teen unable to speak English. She had few advantages. Can all the non Hispanics stop talking garbage and stay in their lane? Thanks.

Lupita Nyong'o from Black Panther is Black but Kenyan-Mexican. She is not Hispanic by culture. That’s probably the closest scenario to the soccer player mentioned above. He is t culturally of that country but his Nationality is as such.
