Kate's dress and hat were more appropriate for the occasion. She (or her team?) has impeccable taste.

Kate looks perfect, as usual. I don't care for MM's hat. It looks like like a sun hat for the beach. But hats are hard to pull off or most, especially Americans that aren't used to buying and wearing them formally. Her dress is fine, but did she not keep the cape on? Someone mentioned bare arms..

MM's hat looks like a rayfish.

Emperor Naruhito and the people with him posted on pg 1 of this thread look nice. His attire does have a bit of a "monopoly man" vibe with the longer jacket and grey pinstriped pants, though.

I thought Meghan had femme fatale vibes with the elbow gloves and the cape and big hat. Like the villainess showing up to the funeral at the end of the movie. Or maybe Carmen Sandiego. I liked it though. Kate looked amazing like always.

I always feel like a lot of the attendees at these royal family events look tacky and ridiculous. Especially the Americans, but plenty of the Brits as well -- people just seem to struggle with the "protocols" while still wanting to wear something eye-catching and interesting and most people fail, to be honest. Like look at Fergie and Beatrice:

Fergie's suit is too tight and totally the wrong shape for her body. Her hat looks silly and small (almost everyone who opts for these little fascinators instead of a proper hat looks silly, IMO, especially at a solemn occasion instead of a wedding). The gloves and sheer hose, which could look classy and traditional if she'd worn a more simple dress in an a-line with less fussiness, instead look twee and unfashionable.

Beatrice does better but her insistence on wearing her hair down looks sloppy -- her hat would look much better if she'd done a smooth updo like her mom. Her outfit is still too fussy for the occasion (lace pleat insets AND gold buttons? come on -- it is a FUNERAL).

Everyone is praising Kate for nailing it, which she did, but also -- it's not that hard! Wear clothes that actually fit and don't make you look like a sausage in a casing. Opt for simple and classic over adorned and complicated. Get your hear done and tame fly-aways. Since you are wearing a hat which is not something women almost every do other than at these events, keep it simple and classic and make sure it is the proper size and shape for your head. Yes, this would be a tall order for a random American, but these people are actual royalty. Whyyyyyy have the not figured it out yet? This assignment was especially easy because (1) you had lots of time to plan, (2) the color scheme was very simple, and (3) no one was going to criticize you for going to plain and simple on this one. And yet so many of them screwed it up. It's amazing.

That's a morning suit, it was part of the official dress code. A lot of people were wearing them.

Jill Biden looks completely ridiculous. TF is that stupid headband?

It looks like something she took off a Playboy bunny.

Really? Worse than the flower on Middleton's mother's hat?

They both looked inelegant, IMO. I like Jill but the bow headband looked childish. Carole looked gaudy.

It's funny to remember that the British press used to sneer at Kate/Kate's family bc their money is from their party supply business (even though they have aristocratic backgrounds). Now the whole family can do no wrong bc the press hates Meghan so much.

Kate and William have been a couple for 20 years. Kate kept her head down- as did her family, other than her Uncle Gary- and they were eventually accepted. Long before MM came on the scene. It was wrong the way Kate was treated too, but don’t tie her acceptance to MM. It’s incorrect and it also discounts everything that Kate did since marrying into the royal family.

PP who thinks most people looked terrible here. This group all nailed it (yes, even MM -- simple, classic, understated). Kate looks phenomenal and both Camilla and Sophie understood the assignment and figured it out:

There’s a whole thing on TikTok that she wore same dress in navy for Jubilee with earring the Queen gave her and white hat. Same dress and hat in black with same earrings - supposed to be a tribute to Queen. Haven’t bothered to verify.

WaPo reported that MM wore a black version of a dress she'd worn before, and KM wore a black version of a dress she'd worn before.

MM, who already was in the UK, probably called up Stella McCarthy and asked for a black version of the navy dress she'd worn before. She seemed to be trying to stay in the background, wore minimal jewelry and LOOKED COMPLETELY APPROPRIATE AND FINE. The British tabloids and some PPs here are obsessed with picking on her. And you wonder why she left.

Kate looked great. Kate's mom reminded me of Eliza Doolittle, pre-makeover. Camilla looked fine - I'm getting the sense she and Charles aren't terribly thrilled with having their cozy little lives upended.

I thought Beatrice looked good.

Princess Eugenie did better than her sister, though the gold buttons are too much and the coat looks very heavy. But at least her hat looks correct and her hair/makeup are so much tidier:

They both look lovely and appropriate to me. I just love Michael.

MM wearing those long gloves and no sleeves looks trashy to me. Is she a butcher?

The cape is part of the dress — she didn’t take it off. The “bare arms” squeals came from the forearms peeking from under the cape. More ridiculous headlines used against MM and no one else (similar to the OMG! They’re holding hands!! cry).

That's a morning coat, and it's proper formal attire.
