They both were flown out to the west coast for a number of different job interviews. Maybe the recruiters like football?

You can get a better idea how far UF needs to improve to be in the discussion with regards to the top elite publics.

Grad rate in 4 years at UVA: 89%

Almost 1/3 of undergraduates at UF fail to get their degrees in four year!

Students at UF are very very diverse. UF is the most elite school in Florida so you have the students from the well to do backgrounds.
You also have a lot of students for whom they are the first family member to go to college and they work several jobs while they are attending college to pay for their expenses.

Most students are on Bright Futures.

Florida is definitely an up and coming university. It just doesn’t compare favorably to UCB, Michigan, or UCLA as an academic powerhouse. That takes many years of excellence. Florida hasn’t achieved that yet.

Florida doesn’t compete with these big 3 publics, the ones with an international reputation. Try to overtake UNC and UVA before you can consider yourself among the top elite publics. You may get there one day, but you haven’t arrived yet Gatorbaters.

My son, who got into UF, didn’t get into UNC. My sons friend got into UNC but not UF. Antidotal, I know. But everyone’s mileage will vary. All are great schools clumped between 20-28. UF is the only one climbing.

UF and UNC are now literally tied in the rankings. UF is on the rise. UF has arrived! Go Gators!

Based on their last 10 years, I like their chances. Great trajectory, and even greater value!!

Maybe that changes as UVA is so expensive, comparably. Good that your child is getting in now. All the current alum will benefit as well.

It’s climbing because it started so low. The other top schools have been up there for decades. There is very little room to improve rankings. Too many privates are in the way.

It’s ranked #126 in best value schools at USNWR. Way below UCB, UCLA, UMich, UVA, UNC, and lot of other schools.

Just read through the thread: the debate is whether a top 1% school is better than another top 1% school. All five are top 1%, even if a couple are 0.8% or .09%. Pick the school that you like the best, that fits your unique needs (as all these schools are different, except all have highly competitive admissions), and that you hold a winning lottery ticket to (as that is what it basically is coming down to these days with test optional, URM-focus, first gen, anti-privilege sentiment, etc). All good things. All very good schools!

Guess the Gators have arrived then. Congrats to the freshman class, current students, and alum. Your degree just increased in value!

Best Value Schools National Universities

Which colleges and universities offer students the best value? The calculation used here takes into account a school's academic quality, as indicated by its 2022 U.S. News Best Colleges ranking, and the 2020-2021 net cost of attendance for an out-of-state student who received the average level of need-based financial aid. The higher the quality of the program and the lower the cost, the better the deal. Only schools ranked in or near the top half of their categories are included because U.S. News considers the most significant values to be among colleges that are above average academically.

Since I assume most of the commentators here are from The DMV area, Florida isn’t even considered the best value in its own state. That honor goes to Florida State at #44. UF is #126 nationally. Instate is a good deal, but I guess being from out of state is not so great.

I’m sorry, but you’re basing your opinion off of USNWR rankings. Academically Florida is about equal to multiple state public schools located throughout this country.

If you are going to make us read this, then you should too. The 50% of methodology is based on financial aid. Florida is pretty inexpensive (less aid) compared to the others, yet is within a few slots in the straight-up national rankings for private and publics. If we are going to use this, we might as well use the Forbes list of top schools. There, UF is higher than Brown and a few of the T5 Publics…
