Why are you hanging out in the left lane?

There are only two lanes. I was going 10 miles OVER the posted 70 MPH in the left lane. Some guy flashed lights I got over then he gave me the finger as he drove by going 90. I was honestly clueless I have never in my 49 years heard that the left lane is only for passing. Is this true for two lane roads like I-70? Is everyone supposed to be in the right lane to make room for passing and people going 90 MPH?

Also he didn't get back over he stayed in the left.

Were you actively passing another car? If you weren't, stay in the right lane. If you were, finish passing and move to the right lane. This is particularly important on two-lane highways. Have you ever driven on the southernmost part of the NJ Turnpike? It’s two lanes each way for 30 miles. With signs that say STAY RIGHT PASS LEFT all over it. Yet we constantly get stuck behind cars traveling right next to each other going the same exact speed, completely oblivious to the miles of blocked angry drivers behind them. Maddening.

Usually those cars stuck in the left lane have VA plates.

Yes you were wrong unless there was somebody to your right and you couldn’t get over.

If nobody is behind you it’s not a big deal but when you see somebody approach you need to get over.

Most accidents happen when somebody has to pass on the right and somebody on the left is trying to move over to exit.

Drive on right/pass on left.

If somebody passes you on the right you are in the wrong . ( you don’t know if it’s an under cover cop)

Two lanes. Speed limit 70 for cars, 60 for trucks. Lots of trucks. I still try to stay in right lane as much as possible but can understand why people don't.

Interesting! Where did you grow up? Where do you live now?

Grew up in Rockville, work in Bethesda, lived here all my life. First I've heard of it!

This is seriously embarrassing.
“Generally, you should keep your vehicle to the right of the center of the roadway, unless you are passing another vehicle going in the same direction, there is a traffic signal designating it is okay to do so, or there is an obstruction that makes it necessary to safely adjust your position.”

This is understood driving culture. If you are in the left lane and someone is behind you going faster, you move over to allow that vehicle to pass.

I've found that the E Coast is terrible at this and chalked it up to there not being a "driving culture" here. For the rest of the country that is used to driving longer distances, maybe we're more used to this but I just don't get the E coast style of driving that refuses to let anyone pass. It's so frustrating

I agree that you keep right so people can pass, but you're quoting something about keeping right of the center of the roadway. This is about not driving on the wrong side of the road.

Just the other day on a double yellow road with one lane iin each direction...some jack in a sports car flew down the wrong side of the street to get around the law abiding traffic just driving down the road. and flew past a school. that one needed his or her little teeny tiny cut right off.

In Virginia it is not legal to travel in that lane unless passing.

So many reckless speeding idiots. Just drive safely and you'll never have to worry about mowing down an innocent family in the left lane!

Are you this hysterical and irrational when you get behind the wheel? You should perhaps not be driving at all.

I'm simply pro-safety. It is other PPs who are in favor of breaking the law and mowing down fellow drivers if they don't get out of their way fast enough.

Stop turning this into a joke. Dangerous impatient losers kill peple on the road every single day.

It’s actually the person going slower in the left lane that is the dangerous one.
