Why are you hanging out in the left lane?

Anonymous
I was once the backseat passenger in a car driven by a friend who prayed to the God of Left-Lane-Is-For-Passing-Only.

He also passed Every. Single. Car. on the two-lanes in one direction turnpike with large cement barriers on both sides -- at top speed.

Left lane right lane left lane right lane left lane right lane.

Don't tell me that's safer than simply choosing a reasonable speed with the flow of traffic and hitting your cruise control.

Wait till self-driving cars become popular. There will be glassbowls like my friend weaving in and out of traffic till we're all in traction.

It’s Virginia drivers that are the effing worst at this, though.

Actually, no- it’s the Maryland drivers that are the worst.

But all the road rage would just end if people around here chilled out and just drove defensively. Unless you are driving someone suffering a stroke to the hospital, there is really no need to be a bully on the road.

Virginia drivers are the worst at just hanging out in the left lane.

Maryland drivers do know how to change lanes.

Yes, Maryland drivers are great at constantly darting across multiple lanes

Exactly. That’s why they are more reckless. Constantly changing lanes is what leads to wrecks.

There are only two lanes. I was going 10 miles OVER the posted 70 MPH in the left lane. Some guy flashed lights I got over then he gave me the finger as he drove by going 90. I was honestly clueless I have never in my 49 years heard that the left lane is only for passing. Is this true for two lane roads like I-70? Is everyone supposed to be in the right lane to make room for passing and people going 90 MPH?

Also he didn't get back over he stayed in the left.

Interesting! Where did you grow up? Where do you live now?

Grew up in Rockville, work in Bethesda, lived here all my life. First I've heard of it!

This is seriously embarrassing.
“Generally, you should keep your vehicle to the right of the center of the roadway, unless you are passing another vehicle going in the same direction, there is a traffic signal designating it is okay to do so, or there is an obstruction that makes it necessary to safely adjust your position.”

This is understood driving culture. If you are in the left lane and someone is behind you going faster, you move over to allow that vehicle to pass.

I've found that the E Coast is terrible at this and chalked it up to there not being a "driving culture" here. For the rest of the country that is used to driving longer distances, maybe we're more used to this but I just don't get the E coast style of driving that refuses to let anyone pass. It's so frustrating

No. This is a thing in states where there are left exits and right exits. NJ only has right exits and folks don’t hang out on the left lane.

PP is one of the aforementioned people driving cluelessly right next to another car at some “reasonable speed” for miles and miles without noticing or caring that they are blocking traffic behind them for miles. PP’s friend drives properly.

It’s not safe to pick a speed in the left lane just move to the right.

I know you just want to have a clear left lane all to yourself but it does not work like that. Lots of people need to pass..just not at 90 miles an hour. wait your turn or get someone else to drive.

+1

If you want to turn on cruise control (and zone out) move over.

Pass, and then move over when you're done.

Are you this hysterical and irrational when you get behind the wheel? You should perhaps not be driving at all.

I'm simply pro-safety. It is other PPs who are in favor of breaking the law and mowing down fellow drivers if they don't get out of their way fast enough.

It’s actually the person going slower in the left lane that is the dangerous one.

Please follow the basic rules of the road (and laws in many areas) for everyone's safety.

Stop turning this into a joke. Dangerous impatient losers kill peple on the road every single day.

I'm serious. PP can't drive safely if she's overly emotional behind the wheel.

As if that were good enough for the yahoos out there on the road. Give people.a chance to pass and move over and if it takes them longer than to your liking....too bad

I truly disagree with a practice that rewards the driver who is going the absolute maximum number of miles per hour his or her car will drive.

If I'm in the left lane with my cruise control set at 15 miles over the speed limit, you can just wait behind me because you are clearly a menace to society.

How many fatalities each year because some reckless a$$hole was speeding and tailgating? Tens of thousands.

How many fatalities because someone was going the speed limit in the left lane? Crickets.

+1. Also, take video of the license plate of any tailgator and call the cops.
