My department in a Commerce OPDiv as pushed out date back to Feb 3rd citing "workstations" are not ready. Of course they aren't!

We can all agree that telework as benefits but we need to draw a line in the sand somewhere when it comes to being good stewards of tax dollars. Defending surfing or running errands or playing sports at 1000 on a workday is unacceptable and you will never get support from the public or politicians as long as you think it is ok. Going to the gym at your worksite or in your garage is not the same thing as checking off the computer to go enjoy some leisure time.

No one in this thread makes the policies. We don’t have to do anything.

Defending bad behaviors because it benefits you doesn't help. I'm sure 1000s come on this board and view Feds as pampered babies

And what do you think that means? Do you know their exact work hours/restrictions/total time clocked on the day you saw them playing? IF you see a time card that says they were working when they were not working, then you can talk.

+1. Even if they were out there at 10 am, PP has no idea what are core hours, what hours they flexed etc. Maybe they were getting in hours in the middle of the night ffs. I've certainly done that when I can’t sleep. And really, it's no different than having a dr appt and flexing hours around that instead of taking leave.

The general public doesn't view people surfing or playing pickleball during working hours favorably.

Complain all you want but everyone with half a brain and no vested interest in telework knows that it isn't acceptable behavior.

No evidence that this is a widespread phenomenon, or even something that actually happened. Try again.

Which is it?

Half the posters here talk about how they or their SO go and run errands everyday during telework and the other half claims it doesn't happen and everyone is working during core hours.

Obviously people are doing it and idgaf if they worked 60 hours, if you’re a public servant you don’t go surfing at 10am on a Tuesday. If you want to do that go find a private employer who is ok with it. These firings can’t happen quicker.

Where’s the proof this is happening

Should start with DoD. They are the ones who get to exercise on work time.

DoD operates on very different shifts. Shipyards open at 6 AM.

My agency opens at 6 too

And they would be pampered babies if they care about a working adult using the flexibilities granted to them.

The PP is just making the politics plain. How craven. And unethical. Abusing the federal workforce and intentionally creating moral problems for political gain…seems illegal.

ANY agency with a flexible work schedule option -like mine- will allow you to work out "during work time" so long as you make up that time. Why is this a problem?

Because some bad faith Twitter user might take a picture of it and trick the rubes into thinking Feds spend 8 hours a day at the pool. And that’s very upsetting for those people! It doesn’t matter if what they believe is untrue. You need to be chained to your desk so they feel better.

Their heads will explode when people still do the same thing while going into the office.

Once again. This is not a campaign forum. The only people viewing this thread who aren’t feds are people looking for ammo because they already resent us. They don’t want to be convinced.

Moreover, it won’t change the policy. The new administration has made it abundantly clear they are out to make us as miserable as possible in order to force us out so they can implement their agenda and enrich themselves at taxpayers’ expense. Being good little boys and girls on the anonymous mommy board is not going to stop them.

DP. Yep. Because anyone who works in an office for a living is not going to get upset at seeing flexibility offered to federal employees. The only people “upset” about it probably haven’t even paid income taxes in years because they’re getting rich without having to work for a paycheck.

Beyond that, yes, it should be easier to fire feds if they're bad at their jobs. This is not going to accomplish that.

You don't believe that a lot of feds are out there playing pickleball or surfing during their working hours?

Not at my agency, we don't have a lot of old people. Lots do crossfit at 5 am.

Y'all need to let this go and stop trying to pretend like the remote work crack down is because people are playing pickleball or surfing or picking their noses during their work hours. The crackdown is about getting people to quit. Period.

This.

Elon musk has admitted that he used a similar tactic when he took over twitter to thin the staff and save money.

And now X is failing.

why ANYONE believes Musk is a competent manager is beyond me.

Everyone keeps repeating this, and while it may be true, I firmly believe stupidity and ego are driving many of these actions and memos.

New appointees have grand ideas about how government should work without any understanding of reality.

Everyone should be in the office! Quick let’s send out a memo. All government employees should return right away.

But they are completely clueless about legal agreements and a lack of office space. This is why OPM had to backpedal. Clearly agencies’ responses to the memo made it clear agencies will need more space and to pay to relocate employees.

I think the most disappointing thing about this is seeing long time civil servants promoted into leadership just go along with this farce. Going back into the office more consistently is a good goal, I want my team back more than they are in, but mandatory 5 days in with strict 8 hour tours is stupid.

It's not working. At my agency morale has never been higher and the people I expected to quit have all developed alternative plans to deal with 5 days in the office.

You are in appeasement mode, but there is nothing we could do to make them like us. Please just accept that. Feds could work 60 hour weeks in a cave and get paid in bread crumbs, and they'd still hate us and try to take our bread crumbs.

Working for the government is a profession. It has tradeoffs compared to the private sector, such as pay vs security, but generally speaking it works the same way as any other profession. People negotiate pay and benefits. People work scheduled hours that may or may not be 9-5. If a lawyer or a nurse or a firefighter can flex their hours to take a midday break - and they do - so can we.

The big difference is that in a private company when they turn over management and the company reneges on its contracts with employees, they strike and walk out. For federal employees that would be illegal.
