Fellow feds - stop defending bad actors. We can all agree that telework as benefits but we need to draw a line in the sand somewhere when it comes to being good stewards of tax dollars. Defending surfing or running errands or playing sports at 1000 on a workday is unacceptable and you will never get support from the public or politicians as long as you think it is ok. Going to the gym at your worksite or in your garage is not the same thing as checking off the computer to go enjoy some leisure time.
You are in appeasement mode, but there is nothing we could do to make them like us. Please just accept that. Feds could work 60 hour weeks in a cave and get paid in bread crumbs, and they'd still hate us and try to take our bread crumbs. Working for the government is a profession. It has tradeoffs compared to the private sector, such as pay vs security, but generally speaking it works the same way as any other profession. People negotiate pay and benefits. People work scheduled hours that may or may not be 9-5. If a lawyer or a nurse or a firefighter can flex their hours to take a midday break - and they do - so can we.
The big difference is that in a private company when they turn over management and the company reneges on its contracts with employees, they strike and walk out. For federal employees that would be illegal.
