Turns out, people have very strong reactions to Disney cruises

We are going on our first REAL vacation as a family and after a lot of research, we landed with a Disney cruise. The bottom line is we need a proper vacation (not a “trip”) and we need childcare because we don’t have family to come with us or watch our kids while DH and I go away). Disney is the nicest, best food, etc. We aren’t a Disney family at all, honestly. I’m not even sure my boys will know the characters.

ANYWAY…people have strong reactions to us saying that’s what we’re doing. (it was the kids Christmas present or else honestly, we wouldn’t tell people. But the kids are excited so they tell everyone.)
“I would NEVER.”
“Sounds like hell on earth”.
“Why not spend the money and take the kids to Europe?”
And on and on.

Why are people like this?!

People are judgmental and rude.

I’ve never been on a cruise and I’m not a Disney person and I would NEVER say this to someone.

Just say “we are so excited” and move on. Their judgement has nothing to do with you.

Enjoy your trip!!

I’d never, but I’d also never express that to you. Enjoy your vacation and ignore the travel snobs.

I mean they aren't wrong..Disney stuff is a nightmare especially if your kids aren't even into it

I am a big law attorney, love luxury travel, and happen to really like Disney. I've went to Disney once a few years ago (the only time I've been in the last ten years) and did a special tour of Animal Kingdom that was phenomenal. People were so rude about it and made comments to me that it was trashy and that no matter what, they'd never be taking their children to Disney.

I don't get the animosity and suspect such people haven't done Disney. Disney actually puts on a good show, and at Disney World at least, paying for the upgrades makes it a way more pleasant experience.

The only place people would say stuff like that is here. I cannot imagine disparaging someone's vacation to their face.

I don't get this. It's really not a nightmare. Pay for all the extras and go at an off-peak time, and it's a really pleasant experience that the vast majority of kids enjoy greatly.

I went on a Disney cruise and it was delightful for the reasons you listed - childcare, service standards -- but also because my kid loved princesses at the time. The shows are better than you expect and the food is not anything special but they will bring your kid like 9 different things until they find something they like, which was nuts to watch. The Disney adults are kind of confusing but harmless in the end.

Honestly people just think it makes them sound sophisticated to look down on popular things. Enjoy your trip!

I can't believe how people think they can voice an opinion on some of the choices other people make. It's not their business. It's incredibly rude.
I spend $ on luxury handbags. You wouldn't believe the "friends" who think commenting "I would never spend that much on a handbag" is ok. I would never spend money on some of the things they do but I keep my mouth shut.

I would think all those things privately to myself, but show nothing but positivity to you.

I did a Disney cruise last spring only because a friend I don’t get to see often was going and invited me along. My DH didn’t want to go but I went with my 17year old son while my friend and her husband have a baby.

All that to say….we had the best time! Even with the disparate ages we all enjoyed the ship and the activities. Wasn’t sure my 17 year old would have fun since we were going in the off season for his age group but the teen club staff was fantastic and there were other teens on board to my surprise. The shows were great. The interactive dining experiences were a blast plus we have allergy concerns and all that was handled flawlessly. Loved the room with the curtain that separates it into two when you want plus the split bathroom made getting ready so easy. I could go on and on, but just know you will have a great trip!

I'd encourage you to be less judgmental in your head, too.

No, my head is my own realm where I can think whatever I want. Try it!

I think Disney WORLD would be a nightmare but the cruises are supposed to be top notch.
