Turns out, people have very strong reactions to Disney cruises

I don't get this. It's really not a nightmare. Pay for all the extras and go at an off-peak time, and it's a really pleasant experience that the vast majority of kids enjoy greatly.

Lol, pay extra, jump through hops, and go at an inconvenient time... literally the stuff of nightmares

For non-Disney, I always pay for extras and try to travel at off-peak times because I prefer to avoid crowds? This is just normal vacation stuff.

So is most travel.

We live in an UMC and rich area and tons of families do this. People who are judgmental keep it to themselves. I can’t believe you know multiple people who are this rude.
You’ll have tons of fun.

Oh dear. Honey no. “They’re just jealous” is the actual cope. They are going on far more expensive and better vacations than a Disney cruise. Promise.

That said, if you told me you were going on a Disney cruise, I’d say “oh, have so much fun!” and change the subject.

Idk PP, we spent $60K on a safari and did a Disney cruise 2 months later. Chartering a staffed catamaran in Croatia in 5 months for $75K and will head to Disney (FL) a few months after that.

Didn’t realize it was an either / or situation - we just take the vacations we want without thinking about what status it signals?

Good brag. Sounds fake or no kids.

OP we have been on 4 Disney Cruises when our son was between 2 and 12. We all had a great time.

The ships were beautiful, the service was top notch, and the themed dining was creative and engaging.

My son enjoyed the kids clubs, the movie theater and the private island. We enjoyed the adults only areas when he was there.

It's was so nice to be in a setting where kids were catered to so parents could enjoy themselves.

OP have fun!

I would never go on a Disney cruise but criticizing someone's vacation like this is a very buzzkill, rude, Debbie Downer thing to do. Just ignore them.

Also, I have a friend who is super sophisticated and well travelled Euro and she gave in an went on a Disney cruise with her kid and LOVED it.

I am not a Disney person (in fact, I am actively avoiding taking my children to Disney World), but I have actually heard that Disney cruises are the absolute best of the large cruise lines, even for adults.

Disney is great, but Royal Caribbean’s newer ships are amazing, fun and endless entertainment.

We did one of the Royal newer ships at Spring Break and it was a terrible experience compared to Disney.
My teens prefer Disney 1,000x over.

Only in DC. DC is the land of government bureaucrats who think they’re cultured. Don’t worry about what people here think.

OP,

You'll have a happier time in life if you learn to ignore other people's opinions about what you should or shouldn't do and not let them ruffle your feathers. Conduct your own research, do what you think is best for your family, and live within your means and by your own moral code.

If you are interested in positive and potentially useful information about Disney cruises, try a forum like DCL fan: https://dclfan.com or a podcast like DCL DUO or DCL Dude. All of these are still fallible opinions of other people, but might help counteract the negativity you've encountered.

Nobody actually believes you, dear. If you know, you know.

Notice how that PP says “they” and not “we” because she actually has no idea how the other half lives. Just guesses. Trying to speak authoritatively, yet outed herself.

We’re a family of 5 and it’s $4000 for a 5 night cruise.

Really? Do you book through Disney cruise agent or yourself from their websites? We are a family of 4, and kids are 10 (boy that dont care about princess, but he has found toy story interesting ) & 7 (girl that love princess). What month are good to book to travel? We have never been on a cruise or disneyworld yet, and we are thinking to give Disney cruise a try.

I am using an agent and she helped find the best deal and answered all the same questions. I was undecided between a resort with childcare vs a cruise and she was so helpful. She helped me for years literally before I finally had the money to go!

That sounds like a great deal. I’m not a cruise person but I hope your family has a great time

Personally, not my cup of tea. Hate being stuck on a ship, and glorified, overcrowded theme park is the stuff of nightmares. I always wished them a good time, and listened to the stories of their good times when they returned. Being civil is not hard.
.

I would judge people going many times. Once or twice when kids are small - no big deal if that’s your thing

Have you ever cruised?

Fun fact: cruises are fun and relaxing, so lots of families opt to cruise each year…in addition to other travel/vacations.

We cruised Disney a handful of times before moving on to other cruise lines, but I would happily do another Disney cruise.

What’s your vacation? I’m sure we can find a way to judge so let’s have it.
