Yes, yes, we have all heard this before. Likely put out there by Tree for you all to lap up and repeat.

Sorry to disappoint you, but I’m not even familiar with half her music. I’d miserably fail any trivia game about her music or her life.

But I know mean girls and bullies when I see them. Healthy, mature adults don’t spend any time talking about, thinking about, or learning about things and people I don’t like or think are awful.

You don’t like her because she sees you too.

+1
The haters' obsession with her is a classic example of mean girls and bullies. They know every intimate detail of her life (or at least, they think they do) yet they claim they can't stand her. They actually obsessed.

Taylor goes through friends faster than toilet paper.

She wants people to know every intimate detail because she appeared on talk shows daily, shared Instagram posts about her engagement, and has arranged pap walks.

If she wants to hide, she can hide. She chooses not to do that. Plenty of other billionaire celebs can lay low when they want. TS craves the attention and has her PR machine put the stories she wants out there.

I'm not a hater but I don't worship her like you do.

What a leap to assume that people who question your weird, miserable hobby “worship” her.

I never liked metal music growing up. So you know what I did? I didn’t listen to it. I sure as hell didn’t seek out opportunities to tell people how bad I thought was or how much I disliked the artists (whose names and lyrics I also didn’t know btw). THAT’S normal.

Do you think it makes you sound cool? Do you feel superior? What’s missing from your life that you need this?

+100
The haters know FAR more about her than I ever will. It’s unsettling, to put it mildly.

I kind of love it that the new Swiftie badge of honor is to know nothing about her. Progress!!! AND not all the reviews/articles of her were glowing. Gives me hope that maybe free speech will prevail and the power of internet fandom cults may be waning.

You're just a different type of Swiftie. Devouring every bit of information is its own kind of worship. You could be spending that time and energy on things you do like but instead you do this. It's like an unhealthy addiction that you can't give up. What kind of progress is that?

1. Being a fan of her music doesn't make one a "Swiftie".
2. I never said I know nothing about her. I said the haters know FAR MORE about her than I ever will, which is true.
3. Free speech? Last I checked, no one is censoring your hateful comments. They just speak volumes about you, and not her.

If I were obsessed with some entertainer that I actually couldn't stand and found myself going down every weird internet rabbit hole I could find, my loved ones would (hopefully) recommend therapy. What a waste of time and energy. And what a sign of someone with nothing else in their life.

That song is so out of place on the album. One theory is she is saying she doesnt regret ruining her friendship with mattt by dating. I dont know if I buy it. Did they have a friendship or a ten year fliration? Maybe she just needed a 12th song for her 12th album?

Oh for God’s sake. That song is about her good friend from HS who died and how she wished she had “ruined the friendship” by seeing if it could have been more. The boy’s mother even commented on it. It has nothing to do with MH and some of you need to move on, already.

Yea duh. Everyone knows that. Why is it on this album with musical references to 1975 songs? Art has multiple meanings. I dont actually think she is talking anout mh here, but that is one theoey out there - that one layer/meaning of this song is after it all she doesnt regret going for it because she answered the question (remember her song question is about mh).

Exactly. Taylor is famous for using double meanings, red herrings and mixing up/making up events in her songs so that it won’t be obvious who she is talking about. Only a handful of her closest people who know the details of certain muses and events can decode the clues she leaves. “You taught me a secret language I can’t speak with anyone else.”
She has done it her entire career except on TTPD, where she was obvious and didn’t give a damn.

I know Ruin The Friendship is allegedly about a HS crush who died, I just don’t buy that she is reminiscing about him 15+ years after his funeral and 20 years after she didn’t kiss him at a dance. At the end she sings “And my advice is always answer the question, better that than to ask it all your life.” It relates directly to her song Question ? on Midnights, which is supposed to be for Matty. Also repeating “Should’ve kissed you anyway” multiple times sounds just like “She has a boyfriend anyway.” That, plus the music similarities.

+1. The song is not about a boy in high school, or at least not just about that. Jeff Lang didn’t have a brother, and in the first verse Taylor sings, “Watching the game from your brother’s Jeep.”

I don’t understand why people expect Taylor to take absolutely no liberty with her story telling. I don’t think we hold any other artists to this kind of standard. Have you ever seen any movie based on a true story?

It can be loosely based on events. I don’t why we think every word of the song has to be true. She is capturing a feeling of loss and regret about a high school crush. It’s possible that 50 Cent never played at the prom. Gasp. Heck, it’s possible that she and the Jeff were never even at prom together. She is just telling a story and using elements people will recognize. A high school football game, a musician that was popular during her high school years, a dance that most people associate with high school .

It is quite possible we will find out that Jeff and she in fact did not have second period together. And that’s OK. Maybe it was a friend’s jeep, but it doesn’t sound quite as good in the song. It doesn’t all have to be factually correct, it is art.

I am the poster you responded to, and I agree with you that her (and the best) story telling is usually only loosely based on actual events. Because of that, I also believe Ruin The Friendship is not about a high school crush but instead about her regretting not having risked ruining a different friendship long ago. The advice to always answer the question sounds connected to her song Question ? on Midnights.

Free speech? Absurd. Free speech is about the government.

You are free to express your opinions online and other people are free to tell you you’re acting weird.

My daughter said Swift's voice is annoying and nobody her age, high school freshman, listens to her. "She's old, mom." (Which made me, 47, wince.)

I love the new album. TLOAS may be my era, if I had one. I only know singles from other albums, but I have listened to this one beginning to end a few times.

I could live without Cancelled and Ruin the Friendship, but Honey, Father Figure, Fate of Ophelia, and Elizabeth Taylor are so so so catchy.

Oh, and the title track, Life of a Showgirl with Sabrina. SO good!
Anonymous
^^Oh, and I heard on an interview with her that Father Figure was inspired by Succession and the big "you aren't serious people" speech.

AS a Succession fan, I love that!

I'm consistently amazed at just how literal some of these twits are. It's funny but also pretty sad that they have such a weird and narrow view of everything.

Taylor Swift didn’t go to prom and was mostly homeschooled throughout high school so she could focus on her music. Jeff Lang doesn’t have a brother. Etc. Yet you and the rest of her gullible fandom believe that Ruin the Friendship is about some random irrelevant boy from 20 years ago, despite Taylor admitting, “I prefer to hide in plain sight” on Dear Reader and “lovelorn, and nobody knows.”

Who is the twit with narrow view of everything?

Yeah, I’m not sure where this rumor got started that only like tweens love Taylor. You can look at the demographics for her tour and most people attending were millennials and Gen X.

I have two teen girls and they do still enjoy her but they are not rabid Swifties. They eventually got around to listening to the new album, but were not downloading it at midnight or whatever.

This thread seems to either think people are all swift all the time or haters. But there’s plenty of people who just enjoy her and don’t get off saying mean things about her. And I hope one day your freshman in high school gets to be 35 and beyond too. There are certainly worse things than being old. The alternative is not great.

Taylor has been around a long time. When I picked my teenager up at the concert, I saw a WIDE range of ages and lots of moms and daughters dressed up in Taylor styles together.

Once again, demonstrating just how deep your Taylor Swift rabbit hole is - quoting obscure lyrics to try and make your point. Did you even read the PP's post? I've helpfully bolded some of it for you. She (and I) are saying that TS *doesn't* write absolutely literal lyrics. She takes something and embellishes it, in this case, the death of her high school friend. Of course not all the details are accurate. She's not writing her autobiography.

And the mother of the boy who died acknowledged that the song is inspired by him. Bye.

Exactly! There is one particular poster who seems to think anyone who like's TS's music must be a "rabid Swiftie". She's the one who knows all these wacky inside details that I certainly don't know or care about. And she's calling others "rabid" - so much projection.
