15yo and Corset costume - I’m the only parent pushing back. Am I being unreasonable ?

Anonymous
DD’s friend group has decided to be Disney princesses. Apparently the new way to each be a princess is to wear a corset and a mini skirt.

I absolutely dislike the idea of a corset more than a skimpy skirt. To me it’s just too grown up. However - I’m up against four other parents who are all for and okay with the costume. They think it’s fine.

The girls are all 15.

Tell me if I am being unreasonable. I’m willing to see things from a different point of view. It is only one night after all.

The costume example:

I am grudgingly letting my 14yo wear one as part of a pirate costume--but it's being worn over a shirt.

Doesn’t seem much different than what you’d see at HoCo and prom.

The example looks fine. The skirts are way longer than most teens shorts!

Sad but accurate.

+1. I can be kind of uptight about some clothing stuff but was a bit surprised by the photo. I was envisioning way more revealing and sexed up but these girls just look cute to me. I'd be ok with it.

You are being unreasonable, OP. This look is pretty mainstream for 15 year olds. They like to flaunt it!

The look will depend on the shape of your DD. These girls look fine because they don't have huge chests, the tops look pretty loose and offer a fair amount of coverage. It would be different on a bigger girl.

Hope for a cold night.
Include a feather boa or cape to increase coverage.

I love corsets, and my daughter has some for Ren Fair. But then, we're all small-bosomed in the family, and we wear them without spilling out or anything. There's just as much skin showing as a normal summer top, meaning, not anything inappropriate. I don't think a corset as an article of clothing, is de facto something indecent that one should not wear.

My DD hates mini skirts, though. She's wearing a long skirt, undergarments and corset for her period costume. Cotton, woodsy colors. It looks as though she's made an effort of accuracy.

A corset plus mini in shiny polyester satin? A little tasteless, mostly because of the fabric, but not a hill I'd choose to die on, personally.

I'm uptight and conservative when it comes to clothes and would also be okay with that picture. With sneakers and those length skirts? Sure - it's Halloween. Every girl goes through a slutty costume phase.

But this doesn't even look slutty.

The picture looks fine and I’m a complete prude

Hope it RAINS.

It's fine.

I would hate it, but I would also allow it. Payment would be reading and having a discussion or writing a response essay to texts about the objectification/sexualization of girls and also the problems with requiring modesty.
