I am scared.
I am a US born Hispanic citizen in my 40s. Live here all my life. My parents had green cards when I was born. While I am a citizen, I feel like that means nothing anymore and with my brown skin, hair, and eyes, could easily be rounded up by ICE. They take people and ask questions later. It seems they are going anywhere and with the increased funding they have with this new budget bill, their presence is going to be increased significantly, especially in "sanctuary cities." At 12 I read the Diary of Anne Frank. At that time, I was shocked how the world could let that happen and so I then decided to be a human rights lawyer. I made it all the way to a graduate degree in International Affairs and stopped short of law school due to the cost. Still, I worked in democracy assistance programs to support countries around the world. All this to say, I love the US and what is stands for but feel so betrayed by my fellow Americans. These claims to go after criminals are nonsense. They are blaming us for the country's problems when in fact if the Hispanic population in the US was a country, we would be the 5th wealthiest in the world. They are dehumanizing all of us. They are referring to us as alligator food. This reminds me of the Hutus calling the Tutsis roaches just before the genocide in Rwanda. They are sowing so much hate and I see no end to this. I am scared. |
ICE has already been shown via multiple instances to harass people who are US citizens for merely being Latino, so yes.
Add to it the huge uptick in cases of random MAGAs impersonating ICE to threaten, assault, rob and intimidate Latinos with a completely audacious sense of brazen impunity. |
Yes, you should be scared. I would be too if I were Hispanic. And actually, as an Asian immigrant, I would not be comfortable with going to certain places. DH is a white European immigrant. We both feel it's too risky to be traveling to international destinations right now. ICE is stopping some US citizens at customs. |
I'm not hispanic but get mistaken for one all the time (south asian descent) and I'm also scared. I was born here to greencard holders, and we're all citizens, and yet that wouldn't prevent ICE from detaining me and losing any physical evidence of my citizenship. |
There was a somewhat helpful thread here recently with some of these same concerns - one tip I remember was that if I was in your situation I would definitely get a passport card and carry it on my person while keeping your passport in a safe place so you still have it if ICE takes your ID - which has happened to citizens already. |
I think anyone that is not pale skinned and have an accent should be concerned |
If you are in a sanctuary area, you could get rounded up while they are going after criminals the jail lets in to the streets rather than hold for ICE.
Otherwise you might be swept up when they do regular raids on workplaces. |
50% of hispanic voters wanted this unfortunately |
Meh. We are abroad. DH is naturalized. We are concerned yet hopeful to be allowed back in. If not, it will be scorched earth for me. |

Trump has it out for Hispanics, doesn't he, right from his very first comments announcing he was running for president ("When Mexico sends its people, they're not sending their best"...). I don't remember him saying anything about Asians or white people who overstay their visas or work here without authorization. And yet he has employed undocumented Hispanics at his properties for decades. It seems to be personal--beyond garden variety racism. |
And yet, last week an Iranian woman ---who came here 30 years ago fleeing the Iranian regime, was a legal resident, complied with all INS check-in requirements, and was married to a US citizen, was snatched away. And then there's the Evangelical MAGA Danish greencard holder in Mississippi with the 4 kids and homeschooling wife who reported to INS to complete (so he thought) the naturalization process but was snatched away because he had missed one form. So no, I do not think this is just about Latinos, although it may have started that way for Trump. I also think that the rapid hiring in ICE is going to mean that a bunch of Proud Boy white supremacist rednecks are going to apply for jobs and use their unchecked power to grab anyone they think is a "furriner". Trump and JD Vance have a specific view that being American means being white, Christian, and born here to parents who were also US citizens. |
Yes, I'm concerned. I'm a natural born citizen, but have taken to carrying a copy of my passport and birth certificate, made sure my husband knows where to find the originals, and have the contact info for an immigration lawyer should get caught up. I could always see that this is where this was headed, but was told I was being hysterical and that it was only about getting the "illegals." Anyone who has grown up non-white in this country should be smart enough to know that these people have never seen us as real Americans. I'm half Puerto Rican half Black. One side of my family built this country in bondage, and the other half was here for generations before white people came over on their ships to claim the place for themselves. Idk where the eff they think they're going to deport me to. |
There are plenty of Hispanics who aren’t worried at all. So many Hispanics really don’t like the new wave of asylum seekers who are often seen as demanding, entitled, and looking for free resources.
It takes for some categories 20 years for a US citizen to legally sponsor a relative from Mexico. So when you have hundreds of thousands of Hispanics following immigration laws, there is resentment that people are jumping the line. When you have Hispanic immigrants who came illegally anytime before the last 5-7 years and hustled to work and never cost cities billions to be housed and feed by some cities like NYC, theye is a feeling that the immigration round up is due to the new influx of so many claiming asylum. And the new migrants who claim asylum can legally work after a year while so many illegal immigrants spent 20-30 years working in the shadows. Now add regional difference with Hispanics from some countries like Venezuelans not liked by Hispanics from other countries. And plenty of Hispanics annoyed there hasn’t been better screening to keep out migrants who are criminals who then prey on other migrants. You really can’t lump all Hispanics together. It really is a very diverse group. Just look at the percentage of ICE who are Hispanic. It is a very sizeable percentage. |
The MAGAs I am acquainted with assume all Hispanics are illegals and/or criminals. It’s unbelievable how narrow minded these people are. |
