| Those supporting race-based affirmative action should be ostracized to the same degree as KKK members. |
Historically white women are the group who has benefited the most from affirmative action. |
I think PP was using "affirmative action" ironically. The premise behind affirmative action, when it works, isn't about changing what the system is, it's about letting people who've been unfairly denied opportunities get the same opportunities as everyone else, in the name of removing what you are from the picture. In this situation, it is about changing what TJ is. It isn't about sharing the same opportunities, because we'd quite literally be taking away those opportunities from other minorities who've earned it. And it's definitely about making the system less color-blind. None of what works applies to this situation, unless I've missed something in all of the empty bluster and preening coming from the anti-TJ crowd. The real problem here is that the people who like to think of themselves as the "real" Americans (we all know who we're talking about) also like to think of themselves as the only ones who understand the nuance of things like affirmative action. So as a result, opinions of certain minority groups (Asians, for one), are excluded from the politics, and thus go unrepresented when it comes to enacting any diversity initiative. The result is a "diversity" initiative which looks for all the world like it's meant to target Asians and help whites. The result is caricatured outlooks on race which make people think that only people who look a specific way are capable of facing discrimination. The result is policy which is a joke from the perspective of preserving anyone's rights. And the result is delegitimizing one of the few things which society got right - schools where exceptionally smart kids get supported by the community instead of consistently misunderstood by it. |
| Fcps is going to Make TJ Great Again. |
FCPS never got it right by opening TJ. They would have been far better served by allowing the school to operate for a while in the late 80s and early 90s with a smaller enrollment. Then the school would have been available when the enrollment in FCPS started to increase again. Instead, they created a mess in that part of the county. Annandale ended up overcrowded and had to spin off single-family neighborhoods to other schools, concentrating poverty at AHS. They had to force some kids in Springfield to cross both 395 and 495 to get to Edison. They are now expanding Justice to handle up to 2500 students, which is way too big for a school where a lot of kids need individual attention. But the TJHSST crowd doesn't care about any of this as long as their own kids get into the special magnet. If they can't, of course, they will try to burn the whole house down, which is why absolutely despicable Asians like Asra Nomani are pushing petitions to recall School Board members and going on FOX News to trash FCPS every chance they get. |
Something tells me that number crunches would be a lot easier to resolve if not caring about gifted students and Asians weren't a hard-and-fast prerequisite. |

Lots of white people moved to what is now the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand - some voluntarily, others forcibly, most with very little money. AA's were forced to come to what is now the USA. Pre indoor plumbing, electricity, gas heat, roads. Machine powered ships. The TJ concept was started during the magnet school inception era- use of capacity and presenting voluntary programs to get people into buildings. Check out the history of Bailey's and Hunters Woods plus other legacies of traditional local racism like the West Potomac/Mount Vernon and Sandburg/Whitman boundaries. VA programs for gifted include regs on nationally normed tests. TJ removes an entire building from inventory so it's real cost includes all additional capacity built and costs of boundary changes that never would have happened if it had reverted to a base school with an academy. There are nuances to Sec of Ed Qarni 's endeavors. NOVA has had a massive infusion of FARMS and ELs in the Hispanic demographic. A good number of which came to FCPS with limited or interrupted formal education. This is not a stable ex-Cuban, Puerto Rican population. https://bluevirginia.us/2020/11/virginia-secretary-of-education-atif-qarni-to-hold-panel-discussion-on-combatting-racism-and-increased-school-segregation "Many diasporas, like the Asian community which I belong to, deal with issues of colorism, classism, casteism, and other isms. I have decided to host this panel to address this very important issue and learn from the experts on how members of the Asian community can become allies in this important effort taking place across the Commonwealth of Virginia." |
Black people are the indigenous people of America. Not all Blacks arrived on slave ships. That’s a lie that is being told to hide the theft of land from these people. This is documented. |
No. Native Americans are the indigenous people of the land of America. Blacks/African Americans and "white" Europeans are the indigenous people to the sovereign nation of the United States of America. Frankly, why we tolerate any other groups in these equality discussions is beyond me. Those aforementioned three groups have a lot to discuss in this country, everyone else should have to operate in the system that those groups ( Native Americans, White, and African Americans) work out. |
The Asians at TJ for the most part have no interest in being allies with Atif Qarni. They want only to protect and expand their existing privileges. If they don’t get their way, they will do everything in their power to tear down not just TJ, but FCPS. They should be treated as hostile aggressors until they are ready to act in good faith. For many of them, that day will never come, so they must be ostracized just like other racist groups. |
Actually the first people in America were the Black Pygmies, Black Negritic peoples and Black Australoids similar to the Aboriginal Black people of Australia and parts of Asia, including India. And even though we aren’t taught as much, it’s documented that natives on American soil were actually Black people. Giavanni Verrazzano sailed here in 1524, long before any slave ship arrived and he described the natives he encountered as what we know as Black people. When people are forced into slavery and babies separated from their parents, there is nobody to teach them the history of their lineage. The US government set it up so anyone could pay $5 to be classified as a native and get native benefits, which is part of the reason the look of native Americans has is how you imagine it to be. |
And it’s not even close. |
NP but really interesting thoughts here. So you must be quite horrified about Kamala Harris becoming VP? |
What privileges do Asians have comparing with other minorities? Do hard-working and smartness belong to privileges? |
