Is it okay for DS to wear a beanie to Easter Mass?

Anonymous
DS is deeply insecure about his hair situation. He wears a ball cap basically everywhere. He is home from college and skittish about going to church because of his severely balding hair, making it hard to style. I was going to go out and buy him a nice elegant beanie (cashmere?) in a neutral color. Would a boy wearing a beanie (hat) while dressed in slacks, sport coat and button down shirt for Easter Mass be in any way inappropriate?

honestly if you're religious at all you know that God would not judge

Inappropriate.

Not appropriate. You could get away with a fedora if you sit in the back.

People wear all sorts of stuff to mass. Pretty much all priests want full pews, particularly with younger people over a dress code.

Whether it’s 100% appropriate or not, be kind to your son. I wouldn’t choose a beanie but maybe something like a solid color wool baseball cap. If you’re in the dmv area it is supposed to be warm on Easter.

Is there an outdoor sunrise mass you could go to where a hat would be more appropriate?

Men removing hats is considered a sign of respect in mainstream American culture. Men take their hat off for the national anthem, when going indoors in a formal place, and for church.

Having said that, I think that many Catholic parents of teenagers and young adults know that it's a blessing when they continue to choose to attend, and would appreciate if he chooses to attend in the hat, vs. staying home without it.

Run from any church that answers differently

Also college is pretty young for this. There might be medical treatments which will help his self-esteem

The type of beanie I’m referring to is not for warmth. They’re thin not chunky, sort of elegant for lack of a better word. Neutral color; black, navy, or beige.

Get him some meds for his hair, for heavens sake. Why are you all standing by watching him go bald??

I can’t imagine a beanie would look better than a solid navy or black “nice” baseball cap.

Am i the only one imagining the beanie being really goofy looking?

I love that you want to make him feel comfortable, so I imagine he’s most comfy in hat choices he already has.

Agreed 100%. Focusing on dress during a service about a man who preached asceticism would be a bit off.
