Your assessment of the relative strength of Russia versus that of the United States seems very poorly founded. You think they're more prepared for us than we are for them? I mean, it's war. It would be a shit show all around. Enormous suffering. But we're better than they are.

Yes they are more prepared because Russians are willing and used to suffer more than Americans are.

Americans are tougher than you think.

The Japanese famously thought Americans were soft prior to WWII.

The fighting is all but over. If the Ukrainians are willing to wage a guerrilla war, that remains to be seen

Russia’s first actions are hit or miss. It’s not looking as bad as I would have thought. Fewer cruise missile & air strikes. An early use of ground forces without reducing Ukraine’s military.

We will learn a great deal about the Russian military. It seems weaker than suspected.

He sounds like Bagdad Bob. Ukrainian resistance in the east has supposedly collapsed. The Russians took and currently hold an airport 15 miles from Kiev. Russian amphibious assaults aren't being contested and Russian columns are steadily advancing from the north.

The left is delusional

Russia will destroy us because people are more concerned with scoring internal political points than in uniting against what should be a common enemy.

I feel the conservatives will do anything including openly supporting Putin. They will greet Putin with open arms when he attacks the US.

+1 they will actively assist and even fight for him right here. What do you think all this talk about “civil war 2” among the RWNJ’s the last 5-6 years has been about? When Russia attacks us next, these people will come out from under their rocks and start waging war right here in America. They’ve been arming themselves to the teeth in preparation of this very thing. It’s patently obvious now, we were just in denial. When someone shows you who they are - believe them. And now they’ve got 50 million AR15 and ready to use them. Now what are we going to do?

You're claiming other people are NJs, you?

If you're so worried, why not provide a counterbalance? Go purchase some things that will help you fight back against the crazies. Or is it really not worth it for you?

The last time the Russians tested American soldiers was 2018 and all the got for their trouble was at least 100 dead mercenaries

From a Pentagon briefing that just ended

https://twitter.com/DanLamothe/thread/1496884141564076035

Just back from background briefing with a senior U.S. defense official. Important details that the Pentagon is seeing about the assault on Ukraine:
More than 100 missiles launched at Ukrainian targets last night. They came from Belarus, Russia and the sea. Airports and other military targets were the primary emphasis last night. But it appears Russia is moving to take control of Kyiv and other cities next, official says.

"We would describe what you are seeing as an initial phase" of a "large-scale invasion," senior U.S. defense official says. Cautions that the U.S. will not have perfect visibility of what is happening. No U.S. aircraft overhead.

Three main axis of assault so far, official says. From Belarus south, from Crimea north, and from the Belgorad area of Russia to around Kharkiv, official says. Ground incursion from Belarus to north of Kyiv and helicopter troop inserts into Kharkiv area.

"They're making a move on Kyiv," senior U.S. defense official says. "What they're doing with Kyiv is hard to say."
U.S. estimates that about 75 Russian fixed-wing aircraft, including bombers, were involved last night. Among the targets were nearly 10 airfields, senior U.S. defense official says.

No amphibious assault took place. There were rumors of that. False, at least so far.

U.S. making troop movements that President Biden forecast earlier this week today. Two F-35s arriving each to Estonia, Lithuania, Romania. Apache helicopters expected en route to eastern Europe today, weather allowing.

Ukraine is fighting back, senior U.S. defense official says. Was careful in describing how, and from where. Does not want to undermine Ukraine's ability to do so, official says.

"This is their country they're fighting for."

I agree this will end quickly, and Russia will be successful. What remains to be seen is if capturing the Ukraine was the end goal, or will Russia push into Poland or Romania (both I believe are NATO countries). Then it would really hit the fan.

The Russians have an airfield 15 miles from Kiev and there is so little active fighting that CNN can interview the Russians. There is twitter footage of Russians crossing the Dnieper in multiple locations and local protesters being the strongest resistance.

Genuinely curious why people are so upset about Ukraine because I just do not get it.

The country’s government is only 8 years old, formed via a sketchy coup that I watched on Liveleak before that site went bust. Ever since day 1 of this government, Donbas has been a contested zone with separatist forces insisting that they be separate from Ukraine and fighting back and forth. If Putin wants to side with the separatists and support their self determination to the detriment of the new Ukraine regimes self determination, why is that wrong and not the other way around? Why is it a given that we all should just not support the self determination of the separatists living in the Donbas region?

I mean imagine if there was a state in Mexico trying to separate and be their own country and if the US decided to pick a side and put an end to it I once in for all it would be ridiculous for Russia to be like “no we disagree and prefer the other side” from all the way across the world. Then when you think of this in light of the fact that the US government has effected regime change after regime change throughout history it seems highly hypocritical here.

I say go on principle of self determination — if a seperatist region wants to separate let them (after all America was a separatist region from Great Britain). How come we support Taiwan being a separatist region from China but we were against the separatist regions leaving Ukraine?

Nothing ever ends. Ukrainians might well lose control of their country very soon. But I doubt it will end up being a very successful outcome for Russia. Becoming an international pariah state in exchange for acquisition of a population that hates Moscow.

European countries are already backing away from real sanctions. Call me when London isn't owned by Russian oligarchs and then I'll agree they are a Pariah state.

Why can’t we have a legitimate discussion about these things without just total dismissal.

Isn’t the current Ukrainian government essentially a seperatist group from the old Ukrainian government? Didn’t we arm the Free Syria Army, another separatist group, in their battle against Bashar Al Assad? Is russia not allowed to choose a separatist group that they want to advocate for?

Of all places why would we go to war with the wrongest country we could have possibly gone to war with? Russia is no Iraq, we tried to keep some semblance of peace and separation for decades for a reason. We had never brought troops so close to their borders to be on the side of their opponent, or am I wrong? I am not pretending to know anything about world politics, but this is all very fishy to me. I don't think any superpower wants nuclear warfare or anything similar, there wll be no winners. Maybe this is to collapse the world's economy, or justify it's looming collapse? Could Putin be in on it and helping to usher this along by playing the convenient villain or is he just a useful idiot? I know I would prefer this explanation as it's multiplies our chances of at least not experiencing the real war or worse. Never knew I would be finding comfort in conspiracy theories Plese tell me this is all happening to justify looming economic collapse and crazy inflation and will be over soon.... My generalized anxiety isn't handling this so well.
