what happens when Dad abandons the family and Mom is left to handle everything, but doesn't want it either?

So what happens is a case where underachieving Dad runs off with his AP, moves out, files divorce and sticks Mom with the kids, working full-time and all the bills? Dad only wants every other weekend, and sticks Mom with all the work, responsibility, and cost of raising 3+ kids? And the child support that underachieving dad will pay is barely a drop in the bucket to help raise the kids. Completely unfair.

What if Mom doesn't want this crappy arrangement, and also only wants to be an every other weekend parent, with no responsibility for anyone but herself? What is she also just wants a small 2 BR condo that doesn't quite fit the kids, and has no clothes, food, toys, for the kids?

What does the court do in this case? Is there any way for the court to actually make Dad be a "real" parent and not a near deadbeat Disney Dad?
Why does the Mom basically get forced into the role of Single Mom?

She isn’t forced. She can give custody to dad and pay child support or send them to live with a relative.

No, no. Remember Dad DOES NOT WANT CUSTODY. That's the whole reason he left. He's in midlife crisis and wants to be a swinging bachelor again with no responsibility.
And no "relatives" want to take the 3+ kids.

Her mom takes care of the kids of course.

The kids become wards of the state and enter into Foster Care

It would be better to get some help (mental, emotional, financial) rather than further messing up the lives of children.

Welp, mom needs to raise them then. Foster care not an option. Those are the breaks. Kids will be f’d up with no one wanting them.

OMG.. poor kids. Like I keep saying, most men should not have kids. They can't handle the responsibility.

Oh those poor kids.

No a court can’t make anyone a good parent. Kids could end up in foster care if one parent doesn’t step up. I am not sure that mom would keep visitation rights of kid is in toaster care, but she might be able to negotiate that.

Kids are definitely screwed since they have two parents looking out only for themselves.

You know, there are decent kids that come out of foster care and from single moms. In fact one of them recently was president of the US and had a dad that abandoned them. Maybe no one wants your kids because their mom is too judgmental.

The least bad parent has to step up. Be an adult!

Mom sounds like piece of work too, poor kids.

I'm honestly curious legally about what would happen if neither parent wanted full time custory.

I didn't think you COULD relinquish kids to foster care. If they go into foster care, I imagine the state would split the bill in half and expect each parent to pay 50%

Foster care is not going to take these kids.

This. I am sure they’ll be fine knowing no one wants them! Ugh
