My kid got deferred. Anyone in?
I read that they go through in-state first and often don't get through OOS apps so they end up deferring a lot of OOS applicants. |
Our FCPS DC with a 3.7 GPA/test optional was deferred. |
FCPS deferred. SAT 1580, UW GPA 4.0, highest rigor, 15+AP (including senior year). Great ECs with leadership, multiple national level awards.
This whole process is BS. |
I have not heard of anyone getting in or rejected yet from the DC area. Has anyone heard of anyone |
How high on your kid's list was Michigan? |
My MCPS kid was deferred. |
Target school level. |
Deferred. Well in excess of their GPA and testing norms. Quite strong extracurriculars. Whatever happens longer term will advise my younger kids and classmates not to EA to Michigan. No need to waste time and stress on an institution that doesn't in fact do a real EA process (having heard last year and this year from fellow student and parents). Was on the fence with this kid as had heard of the very high deferral EA later to be admitted, and wish my DD hadn't wanted her time on this. Oh well, lesson learned. |

What's RD like for OOS applicants, not deferred from EA, but first-time applicants? I know there is the supposition that early is better, but is there any actual data? |
Accepted!! |
Deferred as well. 34 act, 3.9 gpa unweighted from competitive private with a lot of rigor, great EC. Not surprised given what I've heard in the past. Essays were good but we had kid do this app last given our low expectations. |
DS is in and very excited! 36 ACT 3.98 unweighted and 4.98 weighted. School of engineering. It was the toughest “match” we applied to. |
There are just too many apps. It's just a lottery unless you can make an unusually well-supported argument that you want to attend. |
I should caveat that I'd still recommend that students apply EA if they are URM. Last year and this year (based this year on a half dozen or so I've just heard about so not sure overall for this year) seems to make a BIG difference in the EA admissions (like URM kids with substantially lower GPAs and course difficulty being admitted EA, with (at least last year) much more of a balance in considering non-race factors in the ultimate regular decision admits). Like depending on a kid's race/ethnicity, they'd be admitted with second-tier (but still strong) courses, and mid-to-low- extracurriculars for black/Hispanic kids verses high GPAs/test scores and course difficulty and, time-consuming extracurriculars and engagement deferrals for white and Asian kids. Based on my limited experience last year, Michigan was the most extreme in this differential based on race/ethnicity in the EA round. |
