Awards Season 24-25

I haven’t had a chance to see any of these films yet but hope to binge during winter vacation. Seems like an especially good year for actresses. Mikey Madison has been the favorite for Oscar BA but Cynthia Erivo is coming on strong, with Nicole Kidman and Marianne Baptiste also in the mix. Would live to see Demi Moore get a nod, but I wonder if Angelina Jolie won’t edge her out. Any thoughts? Films you’ve loved so far?

There’s also Karla Gascon and Fernanda Torres. I’d be surprised if Gascon doesn’t get a nom. Very competitive category this year. I think AJ is the only one who hasn’t had any critics awards wins so far. Even Pam Anderson had one. She could get bumped.

I think Madison is the only lock, but Jolie and Gascon are close. Then I think it will be 2 of these three: Kidman, Erivo and Jean-Baptiste. But it’s tight, could be an upset beyond Madison. Would love to see Moore in there too, but competition too tough imo.

Marianne Jean-Baptiste should get in, has one two out of three critics awards so far. Yes, Mikey Madison is a sure thing. Not sure about the other three spots. Netflix is known to spend a lot of money on promotion, so maybe Gascon and Jolie both get noms? Then it would Kidman, Moore, or Erivo for the last slot. Erivo has the momentum right now.

I usually follow Gold Derby for this. They currently have Madison, Jolie, Gascon, Kidman, and Erivo--in that order. Jean-Baptiste is in 6th. I also think she'll get a nomination, probably bumping Kidman.

Moore is in 7th, could possibly be a spoiler. More likely Gascon than Jolie imo because Jolie's part is such a big, showy one and she'd been everywhere promoting it.

There is a school of thought that good narratives are huge factors in Oscar nominations.

1) Mikey Madison has the ingenue breakout narrative
2) Gascon represents a major "first"
3) Demi has the "major 90s movie star is back" plus loving relationship with declining ex narrative. But old white male voters will probably be turned off by her film.
4) Jolie has the "she's back" to a lesser extent but the Pitt nastiness offsets. Polarizing, maybe especially to old white male voters
5) Kidman no narrative, works constantly, much-rewarded
6) Erivo no narrative
7) M J-B no narrative

What's going on with Best Actor?

Adrien Brody, Ralph Fiennes and Colman Domingo all seem to be strong contenders.

Kieran Culkin seems to be the favorite for Best Supporting Actor right now, though there was buzz about Denzel too.

Best Supporting Actress seems pretty open.

Is it only the women who need narratives? Because I never hear this kind of stuff about the men.

Best Supporting was all about Zoe Saldana initially, now Ariana Grande has the buzz.

I’ve never heard of any of the directors which is crazy.

The critics who updated their Best Actress predictions this month are split between Demi Moore and
Mikey Madison. At this point I think it will be surprising if Demi doesn't get a nomination.

Brody is winning the Oscar. I'm hoping he doesn't sweep, and Fiennes gets BAFTA and Domingo gets SAG.

Agree. Would love to see Fiennes and Colman receive recognition, too. Conclave wasn't amazing but I thought Fiennes did career-best work in his role.
