Could Trump's victory lead to saner DC crime policy?

Anonymous
This, I think, is one silver lining to his victory. Local Dems and the DC USAO have completely dropped the ball on public safety. While I doubt the GOP will repeal home rule and take over DC's juvenile crime policy, can we at least expect Trump's US Attorney for DC to actually take violent crime seriously (unlike Matthew Graves)? Can we expect the District to get safer under Trump? Or is this wishful thinking?

I’m laughing a bit. Under Trump, DC became incredibly unsafe. Particularly on Jan 6.
I think you can see things get less safe, I would expect some capitol police to quit rather than work near his White House.

He's the ringleader of crime.

That's objectively untrue though. Crime was relatively low in the 2010s. After covid eroded social norms and progressives became convinced that prosecuting crime is racist, violence exploded. Matthew Graves has gotten better but he only prosecuted 33% of crimes in 2023. Crime and anti-social behavior are worse now than under Trump.

Maybe Trump will appoint a USAO that is tougher on crime. But DC still has a big problem with its judges and case law that makes it harder to prosecute crimes here. That is much harder to change.

From Axios DC:

Meanwhile, Trump will command tools to micromanage D.C.

He could send in the National Guard to combat crime. Or revive a takeover of the Metropolitan Police Department — once attempted in the summer of 2020, but prevented after city leaders pushed back.

Actually, it's quite true. In 2017, DC had 116 homicides. In 2020, even though most of us spent the year cooped up in our homes, the number of homicides in DC had risen to 195, a 68 percent increase from the year of Trump's first full term.

Motor vehicle theft in DC also rose by about 50 percent during Trump's first term.

His website specifically calls out DC for its crime.

Dear women:

If you allow yourself to get pregnant, you will become a ward of the state and your life, health and personal autonomy will no longer matter

DO. NOT. GET. PREGNANT!

It’s not just extremely expensive, it’s life threatening.

In 1910 Franz Joseph told TR that "The idea of my office is to protect my people from their politicians."

We should petition Trump to be Franz Joseph for us.

Thank you! I was wondering the same thing! I’m liberal, but also a sane person living in SE. we need to ARREST and PROSECUTE violent criminals! I don’t give a fk if that hurts yours feelings. This is why Trump won. He will cut through the woke nonsense and if someone commits a violent crime even if they are “youth(up to age 25) as the progressive city council has placed into law, they should know swift punishment is in order!

The DC crime surge started during the reign of Trump-appointed USAO Jessie Liu. It pre-dated COVID.

She then went onto a cushy partner gig at Skadden:

You think he will appoint someone better? Not likely. They don't give two craps about prosecuting DC criminals.
