Lower numbers with lifestyle only

Anonymous
Has anyone had real high triglyceriddes and cholesterol and successfully gotten them down into the normal range through lifestyle modifications alone and what kind of changes did you make and how strict? How long did it take to get to normal? I don’t want to go back on statins because I had some bad neuropathy last time I was on them. I’ve been considered ‘pre diabetic’ for the past 10 years too. Weird thing is my bmi is in the high normal range so technically not overweight but doc says to lose 10%.

Nope, not me. Extreme decrease on statin, right back up off it despite greatly improved diet and exercise. I was also briefly in diabetes range, came down to pre-diabetes range, at which point doctor agreed to discontinue the statin. I was going to ask about a non-statin alternative; but the doctor quickly said I didn't need to take cholesterol medication since diabetes was no longer significantly increasing risks.

Do you have other risks for heart disease? If so, ask about non-statin alternatives.

I have a friend who went vegan. She lowered her overall numbers drastically. However, she still takes a statin. Some people are just genetically predisposed to high numbers.

Yes, but you’re not going to like the answer. Full paleo…no exceptions. No gluten or wheat, no rice, potatoes or other gluten free starches. No alcohol. And absolutely no sugar. And intermittent fasting - no food intake between 8 pm and noon.

Does high cholesterol run in the family? If so, you could eat rabbit food every day and it wouldn't make a dent.

I am trying to do it by diet but no luck yet.
I am in excellent shape and exercise daily.

I quit alcohol and a year later my cholesterol went up a little. So that was not it.

Now I am really, really avoiding red meats and will see if that changes anything. That is/was my last variable in the diet. I eat high protein diet and was having red meat maybe 3x-5x a month. Cut that back to once an month and cut out turkey sausage to once or twice a month from probably 6-8x a month.

My ac1 is low and blood pressure normal so not statin yet.

I had to really limit oils and sugars - even things like sauce when cooking.

I know a 55 yo man who was diagnosed with borderline diabetes, started walking tons, lost weight and now has good numbers. He doesn’t work.

DH was able to lower his to normal range with diet and lifestyle, but it took some huge changes. Vegetarian diet, 1-2 hours of intense cardio 4-5 days per week.

I still take a statin but was able to better my post-statin numbers (A1C, cholesterol, and triglycerides) a lot when I adopted lifestyle changes. Switched then to less powerful statin.

Some cholesterol is genetic. I had a vegan coworker, thin, hers was over 200 in her 40s.

My mother lowered her cholesterol with niacin, plant sterols, and fish oil. She had a bad reaction to statins. I have lowered my cholesterol taking the targeted probiotic Lactobacillus reuteri 30242.

Fish oil pills helped lowered my triglycerides.

I lowered my LDL with diet changes. Down 100 points in 4 months. I decreased saturated fat by a lot, and increased fiber. I added things like beans, chickpeas, oats, and chia seeds and replaced animal fats with olive oil and avocado oil. I also read that coffee made with a non-paper filter can be a culprit, so I switched to paper filters.

My triglycerides were already fine so no advice there.
