Would be great to see if one of you Techies could run a language analysis of posts to see college bias on DCUM. My best guess it would be like:
Biased positive: HYP Brown MIT UVA WASP minus the P Rice Duke Balanced: Dartmouth BC Notre Dame Penn Michigan Miami Tulane Texas Biased negative: Cornell Stanford Northeastern Georgetown Chicago Pomona + other non WAS SLAC Cal system Columbia |
| idk there is quite a bit of Duke bashing on recent threads |
|
Adds & changes
UMD, William & Mary, JMU positive (regional bias at play); Harvard move to balanced (trashed more compared with Princeton & Yale); Tufts negative |
Hmm. I sent kids to Oberlin and W&M. Interested to see where they fall in your rankings. I’d say WM balanced. Great school and less hyped by UVA despite almost identical admission stats (within 1 ACT point and .05 GPA on admissions— and in some cases WM has the high stats). Oberlin biased negative. But largely because there is one identifiable Oberlin hater who must have a keyword search saved or something . They should be here any minute??? Anyway, where do those schools go? Also JMU, VT and UMD, since at least kids I know end up at one of these. |

How does a language analysis decide if posts are biased positive or negative?
Do you just mean are there more posters who like a school than dislike it, or are you looking for people like the UMD booster or the Pomona basher? |
| Who cares? If any high schooler is making a college decision based on what’s posted DCUM, they’re already cooked. |
|
There are regional and class preferences for schools. No surprise there. What would a sentiment analysis prove? We come here for little nuggets of insight then make our own decisions about our own sentiments.
The Ivy League is a known status goal with or without DCUM's help. |
💯 A lot of great information on DCUM. Unfortunately, a lot of toxic misinformation as well. |
| Cornell and Northeastern are two of the most applied private schools around DMV area, so it must be positive. |
Luckily, most high schoolers aren’t moms or dads yet so they aren’t on DCUM. |
| I would say more bash UVA here than post positively about it. |
| Yay. We are an all balanced school family here. |
They are here. Occasionally, they speak up. Precocious kids are always interested in what grownups are looking at. What keeps them off this site is that this site is less fun and relatable than Reddit. It's more focused on the issues of concern to parents who have to scaffold their kids through the process. |
What are you basing this on? What’s your source? |
| I think that UVA is so controversial because it’s a local flagship. Many posters here are probably Virginia natives who either got in or got rejected when they went to college. |
