I've been on DCUM for literally decades now. ahem. Could not agree more with the above list. People piss their pants over Wisconsin and act as if they've never heard of Washington before. Same for Indiana vs. Iowa, and Pitt vs. Minnesota. I have no opinion on any of these schools (except for UWisconsin, which is way overhyped inside the beltway). |
Not sure this is accurate. It’s not a household name everywhere but I’m not from this area and I knew that it’s a very good school. |

I'm not in the DMV -- I lived there roughly 1992-99. I'm really struggling to come up with where W&M is located -- I'm thinking either Massachusetts or Virginia? But I want to see how long I can go before looking it up. (Kind of like how I try to see how many days I can go before accidentally finding out who won the Superbowl.)
And I checked the box on the SAT for SLACs 40 years ago in high school and got brochures from hundreds of SLACs. And I worked on and supported software decades ago that was purchased by hundreds of colleges/universities across the country. (Though I once accidentally insulted someone from UNO for not knowing that the person who called me out of the blue was from the University of New Orleans.) |
| UNO is the University of Nebraska at Omaha. |
Accurate! |
NJ prep: we love W&Mary ! It's very popular, considered just a notch below ivies, hard to get into out of state. I think people in Virginia do not realize how lucky they are to have it as IN state, for tuition as well as slightly easier admission. |
| oh no, William & Mary won’t do |
Agree, but it isn't discussed or bashed as often as those on the negative list, and there are plenty of boosters here as well. |
Harvard and Yale definitely not biased positive - they get a lot of hate here. |
|
Northwestern— balanced
Tulane—negative Wash U—negative Hopkins—negative |
| lol! DC1 is at an OOS flagship that’s disdained by many here. And we’re thrilled that they have left the east coast elitist bubble and are having a great education and experience! |
| William and Mary has students from 49 states in it's last class, so there must some who know about it. |
This is what I was coming to post. JHU has a much better reputation and public rating outside DCUM than inside. On DCUM, there are a lot of people who have never been there, but like to castigate it because it is in Baltimore, a city they despite, but again, have never been to. JHU alum who knows that most of what is posted on DCUM about JHU, is false. |
Can be done. But who cares???!!! |
| I don't have any connection to William & Mary, but people who haven't heard of it are a bit ignorant of American academia. It is the second oldest school in the country (Harvard was the first). If you only get your college knowledge from sports, sure, it is less famous. But it has a lot of famous alum, from Thomas Jefferson to Oscar winner Cord Jefferson. |
