Early 50s. Can’t fall asleep easily, sleep by 12 ish and am promptly awake by 4:30 am. It’s taking a toll on my mental health.
I keep the room sufficiently cool, have an early dinner. Teas help a bit but wake me up to use the bathroom. I do limit my screen time and don’t have caffeine after 4. I do have worries, that I can’t help. What helps tame racing thoughts? Can’t deal with this any more! |
Have you tried magnesium and gong to bed at 10? |
If this is really a problem you should try cutting caffeine altogether. Go cold turkey and take Advil round the clock for 4 days. It’s not that bad. I’ve done it a bunch of times over the decades.
Caffeine at 3pm would absolutely ruin my sleep. People have different sensitivity to it. |
I'm in a similar situation and can commiserate but don't really have any suggestions, other than cutting off caffeine earlier in the day, maybe none after noon. |
Don't drink tea. Put that in the same category as not-after-4pm. Maybe other liquids not after 7ish. As you age, you are going to wake-up. You just are. And you might as well go to the bathroom because sometimes you'll have to.
Accept that you'll get up in the night, just work to minimize it. And the issue *really* is not going down a rabbit's hole of worry. |
Op here. Wanted to clarify. I am on decaf for a few months now. I drink a small amount ( less than 6 oz) just twice, the last one being around 3:30. No other caffeine |
you should keep a sleep journal for a few weeks, recording food, drink, exercise, supplements etc. When I did this I found that I am extremely sensitive to caffeine and cannot drink it after 10 am or it impacts my sleep. Yes, decaf does have caffeine in it. I also cannot eat chocolate at all - any time of day- or it impacts my sleep. |
Ear plugs and sleep mask. Even if you think that your room is dark and quiet. Cheap and easy, so worth a try. Changed my (mid)life. |
Well, stop doing that and see what happens. |
I find that small aches and pains wake me up. During the day I ignore them, but they disrupt my fragile sleep. Tylenol before bed helps. Also getting exercise to make me physically tired helps. |
Edibles! Completely changed my sleep for the better. No racing thoughts -- easily sleep through the night -- wake up refreshed! |
NO Caffeine of any sort (some people are exquisitely sensitive to it), no water after pm, all of the other things suggested above. Edibles. and Trazodone helps me actually make it through the night without having to get up. I use memory drills (count down from 100 by 3s, etc.). Try Calm and the other sleep devices you can put on your phone |
No caffeine at all after noon. Even decaf has caffeine. Get your liquids in early in the day, then be done at dinnertime. Walk, or even walk in place. Go to bed earlier. Try this.
Then add either magnesium then Tylenol to see if either helps. |
Don't let the waking-up be of any concern. That part is ordinary. |
Hormone replacement. |
