Personally I think it's sexist, but I don't think it should be banned. However the subjects that they found for this article are insufferable. I almost have to believe it's satire because no self-respecting person would publicly have these opinions published.

I am cringing pretty hard at some of these quotes. Like, I am Chinese American, and these views about gender and rationalizations for sex selection are something I expect from a rural, uneducated, poor Chinese person from my grandparents’ generation, not young, affluent people with advanced degrees in a wealthy country.
Good on the author for covering several issues with this trend, both in terms of individual choice and societal attitudes. |
| old age insurance. |
| We had to use IVF for infertility and we didn't want to know or choose sex. |

Medical reasons are legitimate.
I used to think I would want only girls in the future, because our oldest is a boy with autism and ADHD, and that profile is more commonly found in boys... ...but then our second, a daughter, was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease that our family is apparently predisposed to. Women are by far the main sufferers. So now I suppose we shouldn't have any more children. Sigh. |
|
On the one hand I find this revolting.
On the other hand, I totally get it. And it's actually not that different from animals where communities are comprised of mostly females with much fewer males who are needed for breeding, and then the males deemed less suitable for breeding are killed or expelled. I don't know. Men and male aggression and the way testosterone tends to motivate men to behave in selfish, anti-communal ways kind of are a problem. You can yell at me now. |

I mean women are the ones driving this. Women who want daughters are okay with putting up with the pain and suffering of another pregnancy to get one. They aren't willing to do that for a son if they already had daughters. If men could give birth, they might be okay with pain and suffering for a son.
It's okay really. |
| Makes sense, daughters are far more likely to succeed in the US |
I agree that the one who has to carry and birth the child (then take care of it, because come on, it's still mostly the mother's job!) gets the final word. |
People who are actually struggling with infertility are nothing like the people profiled in this article. |
This is a myth about girls and autism. Women present differently. Yes two kids are enough. |
Women are losing their health care rights and this is the issue you cry 'sexism?' This does not affect me nor you. |
| I found it interesting that one of the motivations was to have a connection with their kids in adulthood. It seems that boys aren’t as good at caring for their parents as they get older in their eyes but I don’t think that’s necessarily true. |
