Everyone I know is so physically ill about this its beyond words. I don't even have the words to describe how I feel about this piece of crap and what he did.

I'm not a sympathizer but I am the one talking about context. My only point is that the narrative on this will change, likely within 6 months but probably sooner, and it will be about how 1) the cops are corrupt and who are you going to believe, and 2) even if he did, maybe its ok bc he has had to put up with racism and probably deserves some kind of compensation. This is how media narratives work. This is uncomfortable for some people, but you are manipulated by the media. Your feelings on this will change.

You are an utter imbecile. Seriously, I have no idea how people like you function in life with an IQ likely in the 80s. Kudos I guess but stop sharing your idioitic and worthless opinions because nobody cares.

Smollett is not the problem here. People like him exist in every race and sexuality. Things similar to what he did happen everyday. The problem is that the media keeps sensationizing any crimes that involve blacks and whites. If he was hit by two black thugs, he’ll be received as a victim but not a hero.

That is ludicrous. This man made it harder for victims of hate crimes to get justice. Over money. When he's making $65 a WEEK on Empire. This isn't the cop's fault, this isn't Trump's fault, this isn't Trump supporter's fault. This is this selfish disgusting loser's fault. And he will not be welcomed back and the narrative will not change. Just like Louis CK. He should live in exile from polite society. And I don't know anyone saying otherwise.

What you describe is what Trump does all the time. But you know, it works because his people are well practiced at justifying their support of someone morally repugnant. The media hasn't STOPPED telling us everything Trump and co do, and we haven't stopped believing it. The truth IS out there. I would like you to cite an example of a figure in liberal politics who, in the last 5 years has done something like this and been welcomed back into the democratic fold in a meaningful way. People who everyone hates but who refuse to resign (IE, Northam) don't count. There's nothing anyone can do about that until their term is over.

Check some statistics and learn some math. There are over 7,000 hate crimes being documented by state, local and federal law enforcement each year and only 0.1% of them have turned out to be hoaxes. End of discussion on that front.

The dude from The Apprentice does that every single day!

The dude from the Apprentice did not have two people beat him up and then say he was the victim of a hate crime. Even someone of your limited sort, PP, can distinguish the difference, right?

No he became president and sold the country down the river to a hostile foreign nation

Can you clarify? This smacks of bloviated ignorance.

Oh, dear. You must not read the news. How about you start with reading up on some of the House inquiries on the matter and then about some of the 34 indictments Mueller has already racked up.

However, NOTHING from Trump on the RWNJ arrested in Silver Spring, Maryland wanting to kill members of congress and the media.

Oh and nothing about crazy pants Roger Stone.

Save your outrage, MAGAS and please crawl back under your rocks. Bunch of hypocrites.Hope you are shaking in your collective boots. And please, for the love of God, dispose of your rifles.

Thanks so much.

Who apologized? I saw a bunch of tweets disappear . . . and lots of crickets . . .

We can go around and around and around, but you have your perspective (clearly liberal), and I have mine, which is moderate.

Your outrage is hysterical, by the way, as you continue to perpetuate stereotypes with hostile language.

The disappearing tweets are funny. I suspect most of those people have never read 1984 and understand the idea of a memory hole and why that might be more offensive than actually apologizing/correcting.

Anonymous wrote:I've been reading this thread but this is my first time chiming in. I'm in no way defending Smollett, but I do think that his actions should be contextualized. There have been a number well publicized events designed to stir up racial tension. I think the best example of this was the catholic schoolboy at the Mall with the native American-- it's sort of an inkblot test in that anyone can see anything in that interaction. These incidents appear to be orchestrated or at least exploited by people seeking to make a point about trump supporters.

Now you've got Smollett, an actor who thinks his career is on the line, and he thinks to himself, what's one more incident? It will shine light on how evil trump supporters are, while boosting my career in the process. He's obviously very wrong, but in the context of many of these incidents (not as dramatic as the noose but nonetheless dramatic) I think it makes sense why he concluded that it was a permissible thing to do. He's not the first or the only one. He's just perhaps the most idiotic and most clearly attempting to profit.

Except when called out - he didn’t apologize or make amends, he doubled down. He’s still lying and crying that he didn’t do anything wrong. After being arrested and charged. He was on the Empire set today weeping and saying that he didn’t make this up when it’s clear as day that he did.

I supported him when this first came out but it’s clear as day that he’s in the wrong and he needs to admit that.

He didn't apologize because there is no need to apologize.

"Getting over on Whitey" is a very long tradition among black con-artists like Jussie, Al Sharpton, etc.
Jussie can't be blamed for trying to "get over on Whitey" and not getting away with it, not morally, anyway. All he can be blamed for is picking two accomplices who turned out to be "snitches."

Agree. I can't quite fathom why he hasn't apologized profusely, to everyone involved. And that includes Trump supporters.

So, the producers of Empire are writing his character out for the last 2 episodes. I guess that means he has lost his job, although the statement was worded in such a way that it doesn't expressly state that.
And, to think that he concocted this scheme in order to make more money. I guess his plan backfired just a tad.

Don't forget - Jussie Smollett is more "privileged" than the vast majority of gay men or AA men. Yet, his goal was to claim victimhood in order to get sympathy and attention from those in our country who find a MAGA hat as offensive. He might have pulled off such a hoax had he been a lot more careful in his planning and had he not severely underestimated the ability of CPD to investigate crime. Perhaps he thought it would be dismissed as a ploy of a gay, black man who has been so traumatized throughout his life. If so, he was oh, so wrong.

And, to the poster who said, "What Smollett did didn't affect anyone other than himself and waste a few hours of detective time..."
Honey, you are clueless. Or a troll. There were at least 12 detectives assigned to this case. Some reports are as many as 24. That's not small potatoes in terms of man-hours. And, in a city where crime is out of control, this is not something to sneeze at. Add to that the fact that a hazmat truck had to report to the Empire studio - not a cheap expense. And, I saw a report where some of the Empire staff had to have security because of the letter.
And, his little poorly executed hoax did embolden many on the left to connect his attack to President Trump AND VP Pence and publicly condemn not only them, but his supporters. I would say there are several million people who were affected by his little stunt.

Why has MSNBC gone dark on this news, if in fact "democracy dies in darkness?"

Well that is WAPO's slogan but I assume because there is no additional news on the story today. It is quite literally, yesterday's news. But Jussie Smollett is still on the top bar on wapo.com as 'in the news'

Just look at the very first post in this thread. The OP accepted this idiotic story as absolute gospel truth and added that she/he feels the way they do about Trump supporters.

TMZ reports "Empire" actor Jussie Smollett was attacked by two men in a Subway restaurant.

Sources close to the actor told TMZ the attackers put his head in a noose and screamed "This is MAGA country."

It happened around 2 a.m. Monday. As the actor walked out of the restaurant, someone allegedly yelled, "Aren't you that f****t Empire n*****?"

The men were reportedly wearing ski masks, and attacked Smollett, breaking a rib and pouring bleach on him. The actor was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

Chicago Police Department is reportedly investigating the incident as battery, and treating it as a possible hate crime.

This is absolutely horrible - and is exactly why so many of us have the feelings we do about Trump supporters.

Trump supporters HAVE done stuff like this and that IS why we have the feelings we do. And that is why Smollett is so so so so so so so so so disappointing and stupid and cruel and awful and every other synonym for disgusting.
