Why don't you believe in God?

Good humans don’t think they are better than others, nor do they consider themselves superior to their fellow man.

Some religious people think they are better than people who don't believe in god. They think that non-believers are evil, misguided and are going to suffer in hell for eternity

People don’t post those things here. Religious people here are respectful of other people.

You can be respectful and still think people are evil and misguided.

Some Christians (not all) are taught that people who do not accept Jesus as their savior and who do not follow certain rules of the church will go to hell.

I’ve been told to my face that I will go to hell.

So a person told you that and instead of discarding their venom, you’ve transferred the venom to yourself and decided to become a bigot against Christians and decide they are all bad people? The person that told you that was a jerk. Now you’ve become a jerk and decided everyone is a jerk. What a terrible way to live. Lots and lots of Christians would never ever ever say things like that and would help you and not judge you for any of your life choices.

Frankly, it sounds like you're the jerk -- making up a whole story about pp's reaction to being told to their face that they are going to hell. Don't know about pp, but if this happened to me, I think I would laugh.

pp has never come back to relate who told her she was going to hell…I wonder why not?

It was a family member.

How does that fit into PP’s fictional story?

How old where you and what was the circumstance of this experience?

Why do you ask?

Because I’ve been a Christian for almost 60 years and never once have I heard of a Christian hatefully telling a family member they are going to hell. That’s off the charts scary and awful behavior, and I would say the person who did that to you was definitely not acting in a manner I would describe as Christian.

Do you know many evangelicals?

I don’t think it was done “hatefully”, but it was fervently said and extremely offensive in the circumstances.

So I don't think/worry about it. There could be a god(s), but I have no idea.

I find Christianity highly unlikely. My take, pre-Jesus God was an angry, jealous god, but then he sent his child to Earth, we killed him, and not only killed him, but torturously killed him, and then god all the sudden turns nice and forgiving. Doesn't make much sense to me. Plus god made a big deal about not worshiping other gods, and then sends god-like Jesus to the earth? Again, doesn't make sense to me.

You're assuming that life needs a supernatural being in order to start up.

Other than that, I like your reasoning

I heard someone once say (I think it was G Gordon Liddy) that we are finite beings so we can't really comprehend infinity.

Basically, I'm not smart enough for the start of either life or god to make sense to me, so I'm not going to waste my time trying to figure it out because I don't think I would ever understand it, even if I dedicated my whole life to it.

Right. That’s called cognitive dissonance. You can’t imagine it because its not real.

I'm no psychology expert, but googling cognitive dissonance a key part seems to be mental discomfort. That is not me at all for this. Not knowing doesn't bother me. I don't worry about it.

I recall learning in catechism that people who did not believe in God went to hell. It was a simple fact. Any mortal sin would send you to hell -- like missing mass or murder - unless you made a good confession, followed by receiving holy communion.

But, regarding the topic this thread, a lot of good responses from people who don't believe are at the beginning

I’ve been told to my face that I will go to hell.

I think anyone who quotes G Gordon Liddy has quite a bit of mental discomfort.

True, true. It was actually my grandfather that listened to him, so I heard it riding in the car with him one day as a teenager. And my grandfather did seem to have quite a bit of mental discomfort. So spot on.

I do see plenty of snide comments about faith being only for the stupid, the weak, the unthinking, but I can't recall a single specific reason as to why belief in a Creator is so obviously dumb.

So now is your chance: if you do not believe in God, why not? Have you wrestled with this question and constructed a tight argument, or do you just not particularly care?

I need scientific proof. Give it to me and then I will believe

Have you wrestled with the question of belief in Santa Claus or do you not particularly care, now that you've grown up and understand the unlikelihood of a jolly old elf bringing gifts to children on a sleigh on Christmas Eve?

Granted, some rational adults do wrestle with belief in God before giving it up, but ultimately, the reasoning is the same: they are made-up stories. No tight argument is needed for Santa or for God.

Science doesn’t have the tools or tests to prove or disprove God. Science can only show you things about the natural world. You are asking for something science is unable to provide, and scientists tell you they can’t provide, ever.

I suspect that pp asking for proof already knew this. Religion, like Santa Claus and fairy tales requires belief and faith without scientific proof

Science is a process. Take a look at this process and tell me why, if god exists, he could not be proved with this process?

I know that which is why I don't believe in a mythical "God" in the sky policing our ways.

I believe in God, but not the Bible or any organized religion/clergy.
