Why don't you believe in God?

Good humans don’t think they are better than others, nor do they consider themselves superior to their fellow man.

Some religious people think they are better than people who don't believe in god. They think that non-believers are evil, misguided and are going to suffer in hell for eternity

People don’t post those things here. Religious people here are respectful of other people.

You can be respectful and still think people are evil and misguided.

Some Christians (not all) are taught that people who do not accept Jesus as their savior and who do not follow certain rules of the church will go to hell.

So a person told you that and instead of discarding their venom, you’ve transferred the venom to yourself and decided to become a bigot against Christians and decide they are all bad people? The person that told you that was a jerk. Now you’ve become a jerk and decided everyone is a jerk. What a terrible way to live. Lots and lots of Christians would never ever ever say things like that and would help you and not judge you for any of your life choices.

<< The Tale of Khaemwese describes the torment of a rich man, who lacked charity, when he dies and compares it to the blessed state of a poor man who has also died. Divine pardon at judgment always remained a central concern for the ancient Egyptians. >>

This is quite similar to the story of the rich man/poor man in the gospel…probably a story going around at the time !

Frankly, it sounds like you're the jerk -- making up a whole story about pp's reaction to being told to their face that they are going to hell. Don't know about pp, but if this happened to me, I think I would laugh.

Many are. As are many atheists here. But not all, of either position.

I may be missing a lot of posts where Christians are telling other people they are going to burn in hell, but honestly don’t recall seeing those posts here. I see posts from atheists relating that someone in their childhood or a stranger on the street said those words to them. But I don’t see such language here.

Even if true, why do you think that experiences atheists have with Christians (or Muslims or Jews or whoever) in real life doesn’t influence their perspectives? I have been in uncomfortable situations with Christian friends. I do devalue them a little as a result. And since I believe they are generally kind and good people, I imagine it’s their adherence to their religion that makes them blind to how they are being unkind. Which makes me distrust the religion.

If there IS a God it would be terrible to think of all the suffering they allow.

Neither option makes sense to me:

If there is no god(s), how did life start?

If there is a god(s), how did god start?

So I don't think/worry about it. There could be a god(s), but I have no idea.

I find Christianity highly unlikely. My take, pre-Jesus God was an angry, jealous god, but then he sent his child to Earth, we killed him, and not only killed him, but torturously killed him, and then god all the sudden turns nice and forgiving. Doesn't make much sense to me. Plus god made a big deal about not worshiping other gods, and then sends god-like Jesus to the earth? Again, doesn't make sense to me.

You're assuming that life needs a supernatural being in order to start up.

Other than that, I like your reasoning

Do you randomly just pull fiction out if your butt?

No, I was simply supporting the PP who said “Some Christians (not all) are taught that people who do not accept Jesus as their savior and who do not follow certain rules of the church will go to hell.” by sharing my experience.

Maybe you’re projecting and that is really the backstory on why you’re such a jerk to atheists. Every false accusation is a confession.

pp has never come back to relate who told her she was going to hell…I wonder why not?

It was a family member.

How does that fit into PP’s fictional story?

Because I’ve been a Christian for almost 60 years and never once have I heard of a Christian hatefully telling a family member they are going to hell. That’s off the charts scary and awful behavior, and I would say the person who did that to you was definitely not acting in a manner I would describe as Christian.
