I was a poor kid with uninvolved parents who greatly benefitted from standardized tests. It’s no exaggeration to say that my life is completely different than if I hadn’t been able to demonstrate aptitude through testing. I think test optional is great but don’t like test blind at all. I hate to think of kids with chaotic lives that affect their grades/extra-curriculars not having a chance to show they are bright with standardized tests. |
DP: See the documented literature on stereotype threat--hundreds of studies since the 1990s confirm. When a marginalized group (like Black Americans) are told a test assesses intellectual ability, they perform lower on the test. If they are told the exact same test measures effort, or learning style or something like that, they perform higher. Conversely if White or Asian-Americans perform higher on tests they are told measure intellectual ability, but lower on the same test if they are told it measures something else. The initial U of M study (Aronson & Steele) found that this difference was substantial enough to explain race-based differences in test scores of admitted students to UofM. It has since been shown to impact performance of many types of all races when a stereotype is "triggered" (e.g., White men jump lower when they are first shown images of Black basketball players than when they are just asked to jump as high as they can, women score better on spatial tests when they are not told they are tests of "mechanical aptitude" than when they are). Stereotypes that are generated over many years in subtle and not so subtle ways get triggered by tests and affect performance, especially when they are high-stakes. |
Agreed. The group that most benefited from keeping Asian Americans out of college have been whites. They can't compete with Asian-American kids. Earlier they were lagging behind in Math but lately they are lagging behind in English and liberal arts too. How does this benefit Asian Americans? I think we can no longer be told that we have to give way to URM. The deception of giving our seats to low performing whites will not work anymore. My take-away has been that the rich class or anyone else who are full pay are going to be ok. we will see how this pans out. |
Provide the link to this study. I won't surprised if you intentionally misinterpreted it. |
Fascist is opposite of Liberal, you moron! |
So these tests were created by Whites. It's biased against Blacks, but towards Asians. Yea right GTFOH Most recent MIT research shows SAT/ACT is a great tool in predicting who would be successful in colleges. So it's biased against |

They’re now the same word. |
To the illiterate, yes. |
To anyone who isn't blind. |
"More than a third of white students lie about their race on college applications, survey finds"

Not surprising at all given people's behavior on this board. |
What are you implying? Asians are cheaters? Do you want to see the news links of district wide cheating scandals of blacks? That’s exactly the problem, Affirmation Action has created this problem in US that race being the first and most important identity of an individual. There are good and bad in every race, we don’t need to constantly remind and reinforce the stereotypes. |
So these are international foreign students. Asian Americans are all for limiting and closely controlling international students. |
You all are exhausting. People who support AA are not necessarily racist. Colleges who want a diverse student body are not inherently racist. We all now there is no law against ALDC preference, but if you are concerned about fairness and transparency in college admissions, then you should not just be against AA, you should also be against ALDC admissions. Makes it seem as though you are only upset when minorities get admitted for some reason..... |
