Will DC metro be a good fit for us ideologically?

I moved from a very liberal city to DMV. My kids also went to a diverse school in the old city and now in the DMV. I had lived in DC before so this concern wasn't an issue. I think one thing to note is that politics in DC is like sports in other places. Trump is a no go pretty though, particularly since a lot of people are federal workers and swore oaths to the constitution.

What I'm struck by is how many crazy ideologue conservatives there are here. They get parachuted in from rightwing bubbles to work for Republicans and Republican think tanks.

The kind of true-believers that come to DC to work for the GOP or work at places like AEI or with Grover Norquist simply don't exist elsewhere. Take Chicago, or LA, or even New York. They're all like the DMV in that they have lots of smart people, lots of educated people (liberals in the US today.) And they have their share of selfish, lower-my-own taxes, I-got-mine-screw-you conservatives. But the "I deeply agree with John Roberts that the US is no longer a racist country / I read Jonah Goldberg" types? So rare as to be people you never meet in other cities. They get concentrated here in DC because the billionaires import them to staff the GOP and AFP and similar.

Had neighbors over last night and we talked politics. My book group talks about politics. My mom visited 20 years ago and we had an Easter party. My mom said that she loved how everyone talked politics, so it’s nothing new, but definitely heightened.

I'm saying that as someone who lives inside the beltway, it was shocking to see any Trump signs. I don't have a single Trump voting friend. Our neighborhood is full of BLM signs. Our friends groups talk about politics, world issues, human rights regularly. This is the opposite of what OP said they were looking for.

I live in a similar neighborhood and know four houses on our street alone that voted for T the first time (not the second). None would ever post a sign of any kind in their yards.

Pre-Trump, my neighborhood would occasionally talk about hot political topics. Lots of well-informed folks. Some actually involved.

But the daily nightmare of Trump was impossible to ignore. A few Trump voters never wanted to discuss - probably because they were embarrassed - but the never-trumpers, moderates, liberals, and even apolitical people all discussed regularly. How could you not?

If he had shut his mouth and stayed off twitter he might have been a "normal" controversial politician that some like / some hate like Bush. Maybe it's my Canadian upbringing, but I consider people who discuss politics with acquaintances and neighbors to be weird and kind of trashy. Same with religion and sex.

Every president signs off on horrible things that would be considered crimes against humanity if our adversaries did the same things. Most don't take glee in them and tweet about them as accomplishments though

So it's just surface level aesthetic concerns?

For such a "highly-educated" populace it's pretty shallow to be more off put by a president's boorish social media output than by a president who was responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people and state sanctioned torture.

You do get thats it's actually more amoral to kill hundreds of thousands of people and torture people than to say retrograde things on Twitter though, don't you? Chumming it up with Ellen and taking up painting as a hobby doesn't make murder and torture magically disappear
