Covid vaccine and menstruation

Anonymous
Got both shots on day 1 of period (28 days). First shot no issue. Second shot period only lasted 2 days. I’m very consistent with 5 day periods every 28 days. Howe we, I had reactions to 2nd vaccine and sickness us known to change periods.

Moderna and near normal .. 2 days late but my cycle isn’t always exactly 28 days so this is within normal. (Not go say I didn’t have an awful 48 hours post vaccine).

Thank you!

Thank you for posting!! I just did and seriously felt emotional that someone cared enough to research this. Especially after reading the misogyny in this thread in light of all the facts that we KNOW about women’s health concerns being invalidated to the point of them regularly dying because of it (childbirth, postpartum, heart disease and the multitude of studies that have historically been done without female trials).

So- thank you again!

My experience with J&J was that my period was about a week early and very intense. I had sever cramping for two days which I haven’t had since high school/college. I’m 37 and have been regularly tracking my period for 7 years and outside of pregnancies and miscarriages it’s been regularly 27-28 day cycles.

I'm getting it this weekend and will report back. I am finally getting into menopause and do not want to start back up, although it's only been about 2 months this time so it's peri-menopause. We shall see...

Finally, this is starting to get picked up by a few media outlets:

https://www.detroitnews.com/story/life/2021/04/05/can-vaccine-make-your-period-worse-these-women-say-yes/7094084002/

Oh, but wait, this one says nope, no correlation. Because Pfizer said it wasn’t a reported side effect in trials. With women taking BCP.

I just think periods and hormones are so poorly understood or considered by most medical researchers and that’s a shame.

I remember when I had a fall with a head injury and torn muscle that my period started out of the blue and was heavy/abnormal for months afterwards. My OB looked at me like I was nuts for suggesting the two were linked and pushed for me to either get an ablation (!) or go back on BC which i had been off for ten years because of severe migraines and concern about stroke.

Anyway, I found a different doctor who listened and suggested cyclic progesterone therapy to get things back on track for a few months. Fixed the problem, and I don’t have PCOS.

I think everyone should get this vaccine, but I also think scientist should test vaccines on women who menstruate naturally, without BC, just to study it! There is a lot to be gained for women’s health.

Mine had been pretty consistently 26-28 days for a couple years and was 32 days last month after I got my first dose of Pfizer. I knew it was coming - the PMS just lasted a couple extra days.

Hormones and the immune system do interact. Look up prolactin and Covid and you’ll see some interesting connection there, too. I had early pregnancy symptoms and prolactin is the hormone that causes those symptoms and it’s related to the immune response.

Yep. Here’s an article. https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/long-covid-and-periods-the-unspoken-impact-on-female-well-being

Two of the women mentioned in the article are mid or late 40s, though. Erratic periods are hardly unusual at those ages. And they don't give the ages of two other women whose anecdotes are mentioned in the article.

I had COVID in December myself and it was terrible. I still experience fatigue, but there was no change to my periods.

I got my first Pfizer vaccine on 4/6, and got my period on 4/8. My bleeding started despite me being on BCP and my period not due for more than a week. It's very light but still continuing (early in the day 4/11). I'm 44.

Tangential to the effects on periods, has anyone had a change in acne after the vaccine? After years of no acne, I have it again on my forehead and the only times I ever had it was when I was a hormonal teenager or as an adult, when I’m about to start my period. And now I have it all the time. My period was mostly the same (except no migraine—maybe this side effect will last?), but the hormonal acne is kind of a bummer. Hoping it goes away at some point...

Got my period 3 days early after getting the first dose of Moderna. I'm always exactly 28 days.
