Those are great stats but on the edge for UVA from this area. Much harder to get in from OOS and here than the rest of the state.

We know another FCPS senior who had similar stats, 6 APs and 2+ generations of UVA legacy who got rejected during EA. I don't think UVA considers legacy for in-state applicants, but it would have been an indication of demonstrated interest. However, demonstrated interest for in-state doesn't seem to be a factor at all, given that the lower tuition rates for in-state applicants are very attractive for families with uncertain economic prospects during our COVID-stricken times.

The more surprising thing is that UVA didn't defer the kid or even want to see the kid's mid-year grades, even a legacy kid.

As PP said, UVA filled up much of the class with ED, and now EA. We just told our own DC, who has similar stats but no hooks, also to expect a rejection in RD.

DC is in UVA Engineering EA, NOVA private, GPA 4.5w (don't know the unweighted nbr) / 1520 SAT / a ton of major-related ECs (3+ years in a row) w international/national competition results + leadership roles in these ECs / a niche sport (all through high school) w national level competitions / paid internship in major-related field. DC is one generation legacy. We were somewhat holding our breath given the overall strong NOVA applicant pool. Very proud and happy for DC.

Where does this leave RD applicants? UVA blog consistently states it doesn’t matter if you apply EA or RD. However, now there are 20,000 kids competing for 300 spots.

My kid did applied test optional, FWIW. Accepted with 4.36 (as of the end of junior year). Hasn’t had much ECs in HS (travel soccer outside of HS). IB diploma probably weighed heavily in his favor.

Is that true about full IB? We only had a chance to visit a couple of schools pre-COVID, and while the reps had positive views of IB, they didn't indicate heavy weighting for it. We were with other families, though, so maybe they were being diplomatic. DS is full IB, applying to UVA RD. Similar stats to your kid except he did submit SAT (1420).

Congratulations! Same situation here! DC got into Engineering at UMich and UVa. Ignoring the other admits, these are top two right now. Which school are you guys leaning towards? What's your thought process? Struggling to understand the relative value of UMich over UVA given the additional cost (I'd say about 30K/yr).. We don't qualify for any need-based aid.

DC got in. UVA Engineering. Are there any scholarships or higher level programs (e.g. Honors) at UVA that DC can apply for? No mention of Rodman on the portal so don't think he made it. Not getting any need based aid. Thanks!

I think she's being modest. The IB diploma program itself includes EC requirements.

48,000 - 32,000 between ED/EA = 16,000 RD

I imagine they lose many to other schools’ ED and ED2.

If money is no object then easy —Michigan is better for engineering. But if he prefers UVA – then totally go to UVA. He’ll be fine either way!

It can depend on which APs, what ECs they were in, how the essay was, and how the school weights things ( for example, Montgomery County and Loudoun County weight honors, language and music classes more highly which throws things off if comparing to Fairfax county).
