1460 SAT, 4.3 WGPA, leadership and work experience, deferred

We were expecting a flat out rejection (which we're sure is coming in the RD round), but somehow my 1440/4.0/heavy involvement at a high level in a single EC kid from FCPS ended up being deferred.

yes

higher and 1590 and highly competitive paid internships and yada yada and deferred. Shocked.

Sorry to hear that. I’m seeing very highly ranked students get deferred this year. As a liberal arts school, the essays are very important (not that that was the problem here)

Crossing UVA off the list for next year. Why bother.

I have one DC there as Rodman Scholar in Engineering and a high school junior who I’ve guessed for three years now wouldn’t get in (and won’t apply). It is fine! Everyone has their own path.

DC is in UVA Engineering EA, NOVA private, GPA 4.5w (don't know the unweighted nbr) / 1520 SAT / a ton of major-related ECs (3+ years in a row) w international/national competition results + leadership roles in these ECs / a niche sport (all through high school) w national level competitions / paid internship in major-related field. DC is one generation legacy. We were somewhat holding our breath given the overall strong NOVA applicant pool. Very proud and happy for DC.

DC is also in U Mich Engineering EA. DC's friend from the same school w 4.3W is deferred.

Congratulations! Same situation here! DC got into Engineering at UMich and UVa. Ignoring the other admits, these are top two right now. Which school are you guys leaning towards? What's your thought process? Struggling to understand the relative value of UMich over UVA given the additional cost (I'd say about 30K/yr).. We don't qualify for any need-based aid.

Congrats! my DC did aerospace engineering at UVA. I’m happy to answer question

Thanks! What other schools did you consider at that time? Any regrets not having selected one of those schools based on DC's career/post graduation outcomes?

Our DC wants to specialize in CS and wants to work with FAANG or other "hot" tech companies on the west coast or at a high-end consulting firm. Not sure they know much about either culture yet but wants a degree with national recognition and reach. Wondering how job placement is coming out of UVA for CS, especially at national companies..

I'm hoping you're right, but also deferred ED from Ivy and DC is shaken and now has to wait two months. Not that hundreds/thousands aren't in the same boat.

My DD applied RD, but now after hearing all the deferred numbers said, "well, that was a waste of an application."

And I said, "yup, probably."

Hindsight....

Good luck! We know a couple of kids similar to yours (1550+ SATs, high GPAs > 4.4, excellent leadership ECs, etc.) who are in the same boat. Ivy deferred and so did UVA! Have to assume that it is yield protection.

UVA employs yield protection?

No. It doesn’t have the resources or time to yield protect.

Hmm.. they may want to look for some new AOs.
