Don't tread on me license plate

I had never noticed these before but seen one today on an old Subaru. Didn’t seem like a natural fit to me!

Subaru cars are actually very popular with white nationalists and militia types. They think of them as “stealth” cars, rather than the jacked up pick up truck and suvs we’d assume they’d drive. The Subaru’s appeal to them because they are AWD and thus have some utility. Plus, most people tend to imagine Subaru as a brand that is popular with Progressives, so they drive them so they can hide in plain sight.

A Subaru with a snake flag license plate is absolutely going to have an assault weapon in the trunk. I know this based on a high placed law enforcement member neighbor.

Because fools will pay extra for them. It’s a Stupid Tax, just like the state lottery.

I agree that the don’t tread on me isn’t supposed to be racist / Trump supporter. But over the last 4 years, that is what it has become.
I would not put one on my car.

I absolutely agree

I find this thread scary. It seems to reflect everything going on in the US too. Why is everything so polarizing? Why aren't people allowed to have multiple beliefs without others slamming them? Such as you can be pro guns without being racist. I think the left is guiltier of this than the right (they have their own major issues). The left seems to think there's only one way to think and if you don't think that way, you're wrong.

I have no skin in this game because I'm moderate and hate both sides.

I’d love to hear the reactions of people of color.

Asian woman here. I refused to buy houses in neighborhoods which had the flag. I live in the Midwest.

My husband is libertarian and insists on flying this flag on our boat. He doesn't seem to care that it's been co-opted by far right trump supporters. He is attached to it for its original meaning. I wish he would take it down.

White dudes who “hate government” but love government paychecks definitely know what it means.

Want to see irony? Go to Langley or the Pentagon and count the number of Don’t Tread On Me license plates. El-Oh-Elle.

It’s not ironic. It dates back to the revolutionary war. It is a symbol of US patriotism. It came back into popularity after 9/11.
So many of the people that have the symbol on their car think they’re just being patriotic.
However, many in the tea party use that flag, and it started making its way over to the white supremacist type.

Yes it was historical. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gadsden_flag

But so was the Ok sign, used by campers and scuba divers but usurped by White Power. https://www.npr.org/2019/09/26/764728163/the-ok-hand-gesture-is-now-listed-as-a-symbol-of-hate

Do you know somehow I totally missed this. I did this sign to my 10 year old the other night and he was like, “uh, mom?!? That’s a white supremacist sign!” I had no freaking clue!” Don’t think I used to much anyway and never will again, but holy hell!! How did I miss that?!?’

High correlation with authoritarian personality disorder and probably with racism. This is probably not someone you want to hang out with and discuss books or art.

I have one, and also a PhD and thousands of books. Happy to meet at the Sackler to discuss Asian art when they’re open again.

Lol, absolutely not interested in wasting any time interacting with you.

Also let me just say I’m extremely not surprised that “Asian” is your go-to art choice.

OP is definitely also Asian.

? where are you getting that from. I know zero Asian Americans who would have that bumper sticker on their car. Most of them have stuff that do with their kids' education like "My kid is an honor roll student" or religious symbols like the Christian "fish" sign.

And I'm not sure about the ^^PP PhD person who likes Asian art. But even if true, that doesn't mean anything.. you can still be a pro-gun nut job with some personality disorder. I mean look at Ted Kaczynski - highly intelligent white dude who was a serial killer.

NP but PP is clearly saying that racist "libertarian" white guys with an Asian fetish are a known stereotype and OP's DH as well as PPP aren't disproving the racist connotations of the license plate by falling into that stereotype.

The ok sign is fine. Some white supremacists have tried to color it but they aren't that powerful. Correct your 10 year old, he is mistaken.

This. My Dh wanted one too and I told him hell no. Guess I tread on him haha.

He just wants other cars not to drive over his car. It's totally reasonable.

It's a protest against heavy vehicles that use strong brittle tires that's spread 10x as much polluting tire tread particles as a normal car.
